I had the misfortune of breaking my ankle at the beginning of the month. Today I’m 19 days into it. The accident took place out of my state about 300 miles away. From the time that I broke my ankle until the time I left the hospital 4 days later everything went as expected. So here’s where things got weird. I got home and immediately called my doctor, my primary care physician just as I was supposed to. I made an appointment for the next day to see her. Once there we went over the whole experience and she set me up with a referral to see an orthopedic surgeon. The hospital sent me home with a 3 day supply of oxycodone which was sufficient until I saw my primary care physician then she could write me a new prescription for more oxycodone. When I asked her she said that the orthopedic doctor would give me what I needed for pain. I called and made an appointment to see the orthopedic doctor and while on the phone asked them about getting something for my pain. She said she could not prescribe me anything until she saw me which was 2 weeks away and I should ask my primary care physician to get me something. When I called my primary care physician back she refused 4 different times to write me a prescription for pain meds, I could not believe it. I explained that the orthopedic doctor could not help me with pain until I saw her in 2 weeks. I have no history of drug problems and was in severe pain, off the chart pain. And this so called doctor wouldn’t give me anything to relieve the pain from a compound fractured ankle that required surgery to repair it. what the hell is going on here? is my case an isolated one or is this happening to others as well? I’m aware that’s there’s an epidemic of opiate addiction but wholly shit doesn’t the pain from a broken ankle warrant pain meds? luckily I have a friend who had enough Vicodin to get me through the waiting until I saw my orthopedic doctor. The orthopedic doctor had no problem giving what I asked for. Time to find a new primary care physician.
