Teas are excellent for certain issues.
I use throat coat tea for coughs or sore throats. There's also elixers that do the same. They often contain lobelia, which loosens up the mucus. Using a neti pot also works great at clearing sinuses, and is cheap to use.

    Minerals can help too.
Got restless legs at night? Try magnesium and potassium supplements just before bed. The potassium also helps reduce sodium in your blood if you have high BP. Additionally, it helps with too many visits to the toilet at night.

Vitamins! Yes, that good ol' standby actually helps keep your system running in top shape. I was raised on One-a-day vitamins and progressed to Nova pack vitamins for years. I never once got sick during that time, despite having to bicycle to work in freezing Oregon rain in winter.

I still take half a 50+ multivitamin daily. When I don't, I notice a big difference in my energy level and overall feeling.

    That's a start. Good topic!

Garlic! Whether dried or powdered, if it's not fresh, it's probably going rancid and will cause acid reflux or heartburn.

Unfortunately, rancid garlic is in so many processed foods, esp. savory snacks. It's an unhealthy product once rancid, causing havoc in your stomach and intestines.

I recall people popping garlic pills, getting reflux and not recognizing the connection.
Just check labels for garlic to know what you're getting.

Best Chicken Soup for the Common Cold
    Ingredients:
    • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter

    • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped

    • 2–3 garlic cloves, minced (natural antiviral)

    • 3–4 carrots, peeled and sliced

    • 2–3 celery stalks, sliced

    • 8 cups low-sodium chicken broth

    • 2 bone-in, skinless chicken thighs or 2 cups shredded rotisserie chicken

    • 1 bay leaf

    • 1 tsp dried thyme (or 2 tsp fresh)

    • 1/2 tsp turmeric (optional but great for inflammation)

    • Salt and pepper, to taste

    • 1 cup egg noodles or other small pasta (optional)

    • Juice of half a lemon (vitamin C boost)

    • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

    • Add ginger (grated) with the garlic for more immune-boosting power.

    • A dash of cayenne pepper can help clear sinuses.
    Instructions:
    1. Sauté the aromatics
In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic, carrots, and celery and sauté another 5 minutes.

    2. Add broth and seasonings
Pour in chicken broth. Stir in thyme, turmeric (if using), bay leaf, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Add chicken thighs (if raw) directly to the pot.

    3. Simmer
Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer 30–40 minutes, until chicken is fully cooked and vegetables are tender.

    4. Remove and shred chicken
Take out the chicken thighs, shred the meat, and discard the bones. Return shredded chicken to the pot.

    5. (Optional) Add noodles
Stir in noodles and cook for another 8–10 minutes until tender. If using pre-cooked rotisserie chicken, just add it at this step and heat through.

    6. Finish with lemon and parsley
Remove bay leaf. Squeeze in fresh lemon juice and sprinkle with chopped parsley. Taste and adjust salt and pepper as needed.

For most people, eating freshly, lightly cooked whole foods served warm is beneficial. In other words, staying away from precooked foods like tv dinners and leftovers, as well as ice-cold food like ice cream and cold drinks. This is the foundation of traditional Chinese dietary therapy.

The book "The Tao of Nutrition" by Maoshing Ni has a lot of Chinese folk medicine food cures for mostly acute conditions. "The Tao of Healthy Eating" and "Prince Wen Hui's Cook" by Bob Flaws are both excellent, but more literati Chinese medicine focused on chronic conditions. You have to be more careful with the last two books, and read them completely, or you can get into trouble easily. Even with "The Tao of Nutrition", you have to be able to make some careful distinctions, such as between wind-heat and wind-cold types of common cold.

These two links have some general info about alternative and self-treatment methods:

For a cold: honey, lemon and ginger tea. You can make it to suit yourself. Pour boiling water on lemon juice, grated fresh ginger and a teaspoon of honey.
Ground ginger also works but I prefer fresh.

I usually do this. Really helpful. In Mexico they make the same thing, but add chili powder too or fresh.

Then there's the recently studied and discredited "liver flush" which contains an interesting variety of ingredients.

As far as I can remember, the first time I learned the recipe it contained:
    OJ
    Garlic
    Ginger
    Cayenne pepper

Mix well in blender, drink or use as a marinade I guess?

I think those were the primary ingredients, with other options open to the consumer.
