Anita Bryant was an American singer who began her career in the late 50's. And in 1969 Bryant became the spokesperson for the Florida Citrus Commission. But she will be forever be remembered for her radical politics and anti gay activism. And an incident on October 14, 1977 with gay rights activist Thom L. Higgins and a pie he threw in her face. They were both at a televised appearance in Des Moines, Iowa. During the appearance she repeatedly said she "loves homosexuals, but hates their sin". And then Higgins threw that pie in her face and she cried. And for a while everyone felt sorry for her. She was a delicate, feminine young lady, and this big boorish man threw a pie in her face. Then she got a look of anger back on her face again and quipped "at least it's a fruit pie".

It's a pity. Because we might always remember how she was assaulted with a pie that day. But when we look at the old news reels, we clearly hear her still finding the strength to say that again.

I think that it was horrible the way she was treated for voicing her views. The gays always talk about not being accepted by a lot of people because of their lifestyle and beliefs yet if you express your views and they conflict with theirs they will do their best to destroy you. Talk about hypocrites. They serm to believe in freedom of speech only when it matches their beliefs.

You know, some countries never had homo or transphobia in them to begin with.

They talked about gay and transphobia in the military when Bill Clinton was president. They said most had no problem with Don't Ask Don't Tell, or gays in general really. But some veterans, the reporter went on, still did acts of violence against gays.
