I saw recently a news article about QR codes replacing barcodes and I made an inadvertently unrelated comment; replacing barcodes with QR codes is harmless since their interaction is at the point of sale level in a grocery store or any cash register. Here is what I said: At a cash register, it's the clerk at the register who interacts with the code. I'll let them worry about someone making a malicious QR for their can of Campbell's Soup and siphoning money from the register's memory banks! What about random QR codes in public?
In my estimation it is only a matter of time before anyone can make their own personal QR codes. These are screenshots from the Microsoft store:
I encountered one that I thought was an interesting one. In a hotel room there was a QR to leave gratuity! Just how long until someone makes up their own and leaves it in my hotel room where I assume it's from the management?
