I don't even bother with a special type of shampoo. I just use cheap ol' Suave once every week and 1/2 or so.

Dont use any products with chemicals in.Anything which leaves a smell, or a "healthy shine" or "strengthens hair" will leave chemicals in your dreads which will build up in the same horrible way as wax and basically go mouldy :S

Basically what you need is a chemical free soap bar. I Use a bar from a company called Lush, im not sure if they are just a uk company. Its a juniper soap with only natural products in it, its desisgned to take out oils from your hair, so it doesnt get greasy... it leaves nothing. I use this like once a week or more if ive been to a smelly club.
The key is to stick to natural. It sounds like the soap you've allready been using is good as it has tee tree, Look for soaps with any of these in it:
    Juniper : drys
Tea Tree: Helps with bugs and helps with dandruff
Aloe Vera: Helps keep your hair from going too brittle
Sea Salt: Dries out your hair (but may leave residue)

i hope thats helped. My step mum makes soaps and says shes going to give a shampo dread bar a go for me :)

No, no dandruff...and residue...probably, but it doesn't bother me and my dreads look nice and smell fine. Hmm, I didn't know Suave tested on animals...that sucks...

dudes i don't even know what's going on with my hair; i've never seen anyone with dreads like mine. my hair used to be thick, straight, and VERY long (down almost to my lower back). but i just stopped brushing it or combing it out after i showered, and now i have the fattest, hardest dreads i've seen on anyone. and they're so short now--some are even ear length. i don't know if i wash my hair "too much"...but i haven't had a problem with bad dandruff or mold or anything yet. i blow dry my hair after i shower because it helps it to dry faster and helps to prevent any weird growth because of the moisture in tight locks. dr. bronner's definitely helped my hair to start tightening up, and i don't really use any dread wax at all. i think it just depends on the person---everyone's hair and body chemistry is different, so just try out products to use and see how they make your dreads turn out

The cheapest way to get dread shampoo is just buy the cheapest, nastiest normal shampoo you can get. The one which smells least nice, and strips hair as much as possible, I had some stuff ages ago which was incredibly horrible on normal hair but great on dreads, when it's cheap they don't waste time on any leave in stuff :p Normal soap could work too, no detergent though. I use knotty boy at the moment, it's the only stuff we can get in my entire region, it's all expensive cause it's imported so I'm just reeeaaal stingy with it.
