Anyone else into these guys? I remember when I first heard Dusk At Cubist Castle by Olivia Tremor Control I was so amazed-- like it was everything I've ever wanted in music. Just reading interviews with these guys, particularly Jeff Mangum from Neutral Milk Hotel, I used to believe they were capable of saving the world.. or at least initiating a zeitgeist similiar to the 60s. But alas they're so self-contained, so reclusive, that the likelihood of that happening is very slim.. Ah well, good music still tho.
You haven't? They're actually among the more 'popular' of indie acts. The main bands are Apples In Stereo, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Olivia Tremor Control. The first is sorta a sunny psych-pop band a la the bubblegum era. Neutral Milk Hotel is a trip.. it's sorta like an intense, emotional guy on an acoustic guitar backed by a marching band on acid and random noises.. like an early Dylan on Venus. Olivia Tremor Control create flawless Beach Boys/Beatles style psych rock mixed up with ambitious sound collages. Check them out sometime.. there's a lot of great music being made after the 60s, but none of it is anywhere near the radio.
i've just recently got into olivia tremor control, but i really like what i hear. neutral milk hotel is damn good music! havent listened to apple in stereo yet...they will be next on my list.
if you get a chance RP check out Her Wallpaper Reverie by Apples in Stereo it's a bit of a gem, can't imagine you'll be too disappointed if you like OTC, the track Strawberry Fire is pure class
