Throughout my 20s and early 30s, I backpacked all over the world, and some international backpacking hostels will allow you to work a few hours for a free place to stay. Some even pay. But I stayed in one hostel in Australia (The Nunnery, lol, a former convent) for months, and it did become a community. And they have them all over the world.
