As you have probably all heard, System of a Down's guitarist Darron Malakian is stepping up vocally in their newer music. I used to like S.O.A.D back in the day when "sugar" came out because Serj's voice is so unique, but now that Darron is singing I absolutely hate them. And surprisingly it's NOT because he can't sing, I mean look at Claypool he can't sing for shit either but he's a whole different story. The reason I don't like him is because if you have ever seen S.O.A.D live recently, particulary "prison song", whenever he sings he sounds like he is making fun of the music. It's almost like a sarcastic singing style...if any of you have heard this you know what I mean.SO, do you think Darron's vocals improve the band, or totally ruin it?
I don't know, I havn't heard him sing except when he sings background for Serj. I have all the albums, but I havn't seen them live. Half the time Serj sings in a very sarcastic tone anyway. Part of the entire sound of System of a Down is very toungue-in-cheek. They try to make statement with their songs, and sometimes they are serious and sometimes they are making fun of people.
I agree, Serj's voice is really cool.....Darren's an idiot. He's too squeaky. I liked where they had that female singer on BYOB though.....
i think hes a good singer but he shouldnt be singing with system of a down becuz he has more of a emo voice than the type of music they play
i don't hate darons voice but i like serj's waaaaaaaay more i'm not feelin daron doing so much vocals on the new cd
I love both their voices, especially when combined such as on radio/video and question from thy newest album.
Well, it's not like I'm a huge fan of SOAD, but I think Serj is making fun of their music too. He is sometimes too serious and sometimes too sarcastic. However, their combined vocals are good and bring the band to another level.
I agree with Ginqlymus. I enjoy hearing each one sing the lyrics or hum out the melody in stride with the other like on Radio/Video and sections of Lost in Hollywood. Lost in Hollywood, the track with Darren mainly sings the whole song comes off a little strange though. His singing seems sarcastic but I can understand that because of what I think the song means. I could do without the "All you bitches puts your hands in the air and wave them like you just don't care" line in the song.....seems out of place.
Is that the dude doing the pseudo-British accent on 'Lost in Hollywood'? If it is, he must be trying the punk angle on things. I don't mind it really. It'd all be a bit samey otherwise. As for Darren live, yes, he did wind me up a bit. Kept going on and on about how they were all on drugs at the time. Perhaps thats where the sarcasm of live shows comes from? They're not in the process of creating the song; they're just performing it (for the umpteenth time) whilst tanked up on cocaine and booze. ~
I know what you mean. I really liked self-titled and toxicity. I think Serj has a really sexy voice, it's really deep. Daron, however, annoys the living fuck out of me. I don't want to hear him whining about his cock, whining about dropping bombs, whining about anything. I don't understand how they could give him vocal parts. He isn't even a good guitarist. I think it's safe to say that SOAD eats balls now.
man, i personally love his background part in BYOB, and i think hes kicked ass since they first started....and even if i didnt like him id stil like the band becaus eit is after all about the MUSIC right? not the band memebers. if you liked them before, you should like them now, they still do their thing.
They still do their "thing", but it's completely different. Listen to Self-titled, then listen to Mesmerize. They're almost polar opposites. Mesmerize sounds just like every other trendyXcore band. Self-titled at least had a hint of originality.
I liked it whne he sand "Lost In Hollywood" that song is really good. But in BYOB, when he has that part in the middle of the chorus he's all like "Blast off! It's party time..." he sounds like he's fucking apeshit! It bugs the crap out of me. I wish they had edited that out. BTW I'm seing SOAD live come August here in Houston.
I agree, Self-Titled is their best album, by far. But I think that that's mainly because there's more variety, it's more raw, and most bands make their first albums their best- they have to break into the mainstream with those albums. I don't think what they're doing now is bad, it's just more average SOAD.
