is having no return address on an envelope a bad idea?

I sent a letter internationally with no return address and it went through. It had a sample in it also... But after I sent it I regretted it in case anything happened, it wouldn't get sent back to me. I wouldn't worry about it unless there was a lot of stuff in there.

it is a bad idea....it's usually seen [at least by US customs] as a red flag [OMG they don't want to want us to know who is sending this!]

things go through all the time, but it's better to have one than not.

It's probably not too important, but it's best to have one.

Like Shermin says, it's a flag on list of things they consider suspicious.. the more flags the more prone they are to decide to search it.

Just find a random pizza place or corner store and use their address. That way it will have a return address and if it does get searched, no one will really be able to get in any trouble for it. Dont use the address of someones home though, you don't want them to get in legal trouble.

I'd agree with Draco, or make up something and write it illegibly so even if it is someones house, they will never know.

Or be an ass and write it out in HEX code. :D

A fake return address is much, much worse than no return address.

Swim has sent many letters internationally with no return address, with 100% success. It's barely a red flag, and if that's the only "suspicious" thing about it then they will NOT search it. Now if there's no return address, its a bumpy letter, something is rattling inside, there is an odor, etc, then they will search it.

A fake return address is MUCH more bait, or an illegible one, or one written in code.

No return address on a PACKAGE is also probably more bait, but on a letter, it happens all the time.

so since one wouldn't want to use one's own home address, what about an apartment building nearby with no apartment number listed? would that work? it's a valid address, but could never get returned to anyone specific

    That could work.

I usually put a return address on my letters though.. just in case it DOES get sent back, you don't want some guy working at a pizzeria/manager at a building getting drugs.

Swim sent a hit of LSD to Florida and put a fake name for the return adress I think. It wasn't in the winter anyways the guy who got it didn't work for him because the heat destroyed it. He still never got to try it.

I don't know, might be flagged as "incomplete" or "invalid". I still think its safer to have no return address. Tons of legit mail goes out with no return address.

It wouldn't be a flat envelope, a small package but not too big. It would be a 200 dollar investment to a PO box with my name registered etc.

It is most certainly more safe to have a return address. Not having a return address is a huge flag. And what hurts of having a return address? Best option is to use the address of an apartment complex with no number listed. Here is all the information on mailing anyone is ever likely to need. One typo to point out: said worldwide and internation when really meant that domestic instead of world wide (stupid that typo never got fixed).
