You know what really made movies effective in the past? Simple props, and simple plot twists. Like when William Shatner thinks "Should I? Should I?" before he opens the blinds in the Twilight Zone "Nightmare at 20000 Feet". Then he sighs and thinks, "Oh, it's gone..." And opens the blinds to make sure. And...Ah!!! It's right there! I don't why that part is the most scary part. It just is.
