so ive had my dreads for roughly 2-3 weeks. my hair is naturally curly, and now since ive had dreads some of them have decided to curl. its bugging the shit out of me!! i wash them with baking soda, and put a little bit of wax in every 1-2 days when i think it needs some, and touch up on backcombing if they're starting to come out. how can i make my dreads straight? will straightening help?
Stop using wax (prevents hair from actually knotting and dreading), stop backcombing (it will keep falling out, so it's a bit pointless, never ending thing). I reckon straightening wouldn't be good for dreads. As for curling... I think embracing it is the best you can do. Hair needs to be left to do whatever it wants in order to dread properly - my is straight and even then dreads curled and looped like hell. It gives them personality!
If you are not a troll I feel sorry for you. Let's pretend you're not... Um, so why would you assume that by starting locks that your hair would go miraculously straight? Your hair is curly, so you may get curly locks. Wax is evil. Please cease using it and throw it away. You will need to melt it out of your locks. This can be done with very hot water or a hot blow dryer. More details can be found in the thread called "read this before posting". Re-backcombing locks is a big no no. By backcombing them again, you are destroying their progress. You need to leave them alone. Please read the FAQ located in the "read this thread before posting"
Hey op, I know what ya mean. IMO, curly dreads are awesome! There's really no way to avoid it if your hair is naturally doing it. The only thing I can suggest is after you get out of the shower and your hair has had a bit of time to dry, gently palm roll them a bit while they're still damp. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. My hair always curls too but it's from laying on my shoulders. THis usually seems to help. Other than that, just embrace it. Dreads are gonna' do whatever the f they feel like. Love it or leave it. Good luck!
Thicker dreads will curl less, consider joining some up if they're thin, don't use wax, think about the rebackcombing, that's basically starting over from scratch which is baaad
