Reid said: Obama had an advantage because he was "light-skinned" and had "no Negro dialect" -- until he wanted to use it.
    Were Harry Reid's comments racist?

He violated some political correctness protocol is all. Telling-it-like-it-is has gone out of vogue.

I often remind ppl that Obama is not a "black" president. He is actually a "mixed race" president. In fact, considering he is genetically equally black and white, culturally, by being raised by white grandparents he is mostly white.

This may be to what Reid spoke.

I think the issue of race is altogether ridiculous.

People can be overly sensitive to comments that are made.

Hillary used a southern accent during her campaigns in southern states, yet if someone pointed that out then they would not be considered racist. Politicians will do whatever necessary to garner votes, and I wouldn't be surprised if Obama used tone of voice to go along with the group he was with to do just that.

But using the term negro, although I really despise political correctness because I feel it hinders social growth, if not racist, then out of touch and plainly ignorant. Just like with the new census of 2010 that has negro instead of African-American; I mean, this isn't 1960's . People are hurt about this because they feel that we are going backwards in mind-set, and I can only imagine what that feels like.

    Is it racist?

Not really racist per se, just stupid, but racism and stupidity usually go hand in hand so it's a tough call. Although, Reid may be doing as a political maneuver... using race to bring Obama's approval rating down and to create more polarity between politics. Racism hasn't died, it just went undercover, so Reid could be trying to bring that out for political gains and make it more difficult for Obama.

As for the 'light-skinned comment'. Let's face it, we live in a world where the tone of a persons skin can make or break it for the politician. ... If Obama was a bit... darker... then maybe he would have less votes or maybe more, if judging by the way people think and act, maybe it would have made a difference...

Actually, it has African American & Black but also includes Negro, which makes it more stupid that they had to bring up an archaic term for overkill.

    So, just for balance: :p

The Census Bureau argues that the choice was made to include it because a number of ppl wrote in negro in the past census. But that was a small minority of old hangers on (You know of the United Negro College Fund and National Association of Colored Ppl generation).

Lots of disagreement as to what people wish to call themselves. African American is misleading and there have been embarrasing moments caused when white Africans immigrate here and use that descriptive.

My wife was black American. She was born in New Orleans and raised in Chicago. She is as much African as I am French (My family came from there in the 18th Cent.) I don't call myself French American and she never called herself African American.

Yeah, exactly. The whole, "African-American' label never really made sense to me. The whole issue on what to call ourselves shouldn't be this complicated... I think they should just go by where you were born and not by anything else. This way, it would end all confusion.

It's so annoying to see these labels still in forms, such as a college form or anything else. I feel like just drawing a penis where they ask that question just for the lols.

    So what race are you?

*Draws big penis* THERE YA GO!

    "White, Pale Face, Honky"

It depends on Reid's political views. There's only one human race, but many different skin colors, and other variations useful for discrimination, not to mention imply discrimination.
