I just learned of this through a spay and neuter coalition. Someone brought in a stray to be spayed and when she was shaved they found her tattoo and she didn't have to undergo a needless procedure to learn that she had already been spayed. Pretty cool idea! That's pretty cool. Where I live they clip a little bit out of one of their ears after spaying. That way it is instantly noticeable which cats have been done so they don't catch the same one twice.
My kitty has an N tattoed into her ear to show she was spayed. Guess the Humane Society doesn't care about differentiating between N for neutered, or S for spayed!
When I worked for a shelter we just shaved and looked for the scar tissue from the spay surgery. Males were much easier to tell lol.
