I was 66 when I was given the diagnosis. Who knew? As I read the list, I really didn't think much about any of these things.
Limited Eye Contact
Not Responding to their Name
Delayed Speech and Language Skills
Repetitive Behaviors
Difficulty with Social Interaction
Unusual Interests or Behaviors
Upset by Changes in Routines
Sensory Sensitivities
I'm not saying that I have all of them, but I can definitely relate to the majority of them. Truth is, I never thought that any of them was a bad thing. I considered eye contact as challenging behavior. While I had my own interests, I would find myself cringing at the idea of trying to get 'into' the hobbies, interests, or pastimes of others (especially enthusiasm towards sports).
Imagine what it must be like to be a teenager who is being driven by hormonal urges and is unable to pick up cues or make contact. Hmm... come to think of it, maybe these were advantageous tools to have when seeking anonymous encounters.
Still, I wonder, how was it possible that I had lasted all those decades without a diagnosis?
