Bank Fees Be Gone !

Someone once asked me why I have ten checking accounts. They grew on me over the years. At some point or other, a credit union or bank had offered a sweet deal to get me to join. It could be a high yield CD, a large line of credit, access to more ATMs than Starbucks coffee houses. Well, you get the picture.
I'm also o the mind that it's bad luck to close down accounts. Old, established accounts with retail stores or financial institutions are considered gold. So, why cancel one.
Over the years, I have moved. And over the years, banks have dissolved or been absorbed. In San Francisco we lost Crocker National Bank, Time Savings and Loan, Hibernia Bank, Security Pacific Bank, San Francisco Federal Savings Bank, First Nationwide Bank... to name a few :)
Before I had a job that offered direct deposit, I would never use a bank that would charge a service fee to maintain the account. Oddly enough, I do have three such accounts (two with a bank and one with a credit union) now that I have direct deposit and allocation allotments. There really is no need to keep most of them, yet a part of me feels sad at the prospect of closing an account.
I have pretty much said that it is highly unlikely that I would ever open another account. These days banks and credit unions insist on having your home address. I refuse to supply it; a post office box is all you will get from me. And if they insist, well, I tell them to go take a hike.
There are times when I dream of a credit union to appear that will satisfy some special interest of mine; hippie, gay, Wiccan. Gay credit unions have come and gone. One is in the making. Who knows if I'll be alive when it appears.
