“How far that little candle throws his beams!
So shines a good deed in a weary world.”
This famous quote from Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice highlights how a small, sincere act of kindness can have a profound and far-reaching impact, bringing light and hope to a wicked world.
Because a small candle would go unnoticed in a large, well-lit room. But it would never go unnoticed in a room that was dark. In fact it would literally illuminated the whole place.
(Note. The original text actually reads “naughty world”. In Elizabethan English “naughty” meant wicked, evil or corrupt. But “weary” is a popular thematic adaptation.)
