Wandervogel ... "There was a boy..."

Last night I had dinner with an old friend of mine at a Polish restaurant. Sometimes the body just wants heavy food. This was not a vegetarian Buddha's Delight meal. We each drank Merlot. He had hunter's stew and I had chicken livers with onions. Crêpes and coffee for dessert.
My friend is a native and his father was an animator in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. His stories are repetitious, but every now and again there is the tale of something new that happened oh so long ago.
time he told me
of a precursor / prototype hippie that he had known in his youth. The man was born at the beginning of the previous century in New York and was adopted by a family in Kansas. He hoboed his way to Los Angeles and lived under the first L of the Hollywood sign.
I've lived a life that moves to the beat of a different drummer. Of course, I've always had a washer, dishes, and refrigeration. I generally prefer to eat raw fruits and vegetables whenever possible, but I wouldn't turn down stuffed mushrooms, grilled peppers, or sauteed onions.
My explorations of alternative diets is not particularly noteworthy. I don't eat things to raise eyebrows. I eat things that i like and -- as of late -- what I seem to like seems to be relatively healthy.
I'm not much of a wanderer though. Leaving home (whether by car or plane) can be exhausting. I sometimes think that my best 'holidays' are the ones that I take by myself. I'm escorting a friend to Key West in August. He is paying for a property that is $200/day. I usually think of that amount as the total that I would pay for lodging for my entire stay somewhere.
