What Do they Take to the Grave ?

It doesn't matter how the dead are prepared for the disposition of their remains. At least not to me. Some are left in an open casket for viewing. Some are brought to an auditorium in a closed casket. I have even seen a casket under a canopy while graveside. The casket is lowered. Prayers are said. Dirt is shoveled onto the wooden box.
I went on a boat with the ashes of a friend (of a friend). The ashes were scattered at sea along with some sunflowers (the dearly departed's favorite flower).
The son of a female soulmate of mine took his mother's ashes to Ocean City and opened the vessel just as it caught a strong wind as it picked up the ashes and moved them with the force across the salty water. Dear friend was deprived salt in the latter part of her life for health reasons. She now is part of an eternal element of the ocean.
I sometimes think of the many aspects of the human that are buried or scattered after the human dies.
* Sewing skills
* Culinary recipes and techniques
* Vocational training
* Academic knowledge
* Language skills
* And the stories. Ah the stories!
I had a Russian teacher who was exiled during WWII. She was from a teeny tiny town which is described in WiKi as follows:
Zabolotiv is a rural settlement in Kolomyia
Raion, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, western Ukraine, in the historic region of Pokuttia. It hosts the
administration of Zabolotiv settlement hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. Population: 3,914 (2022
estimate). In 2001, the population was 4,129.
She used to tell us that the name of her village meant Behind the Mud. She used poetic license to come up with that one.
Still... no matter how much you learn or think you have learned in a language class, there is always something more to pick up. I have taken French I and II classes three times in my life. The basic grammar stays the same, but what seems to change over time is the vocabulary. New technology creates new vocabulary. Wardrobes differ, explanations of housing needs changed, even the cost and process of making a phone call is not the same as it was in my day.
