Bassists................|........Played with -------------------|----------------- 1. Berry Oakley (Allman Brothers Band) 2. Victor Wooten (Bela Fleck) 3. Les Claypool (Flying Frog Brigade, Primus) 4. George Porter (David Byrne, Dr. John, Gov't Mule) 5. Rob Derhak (moe.)
Les Claypool of course, ive been listeing to primus and such for too long to keep hiim off the list. Victor Wooten though...its a toss up.
Upright- PC, Ron Carter, Mingus, and Gary Peacock Electric- Mike Gordon, Paul Jackson (with Herbie on Headhunters and Thrust; grooves like a motherfucker), Steve Bailey, Jamerson, Stanely and Jaco.
Les is a one trick pony, should be one of the first dropped from a list of good bassists...dont get me started! What about: Tony Levin (peter gabriel, many many others) Jack Casady (Hot tuna, jefferson airplane) Duck Dunn (blues bros, booker t and the mgs, stax records session man) Geddy Lee Geezer Butler Tommy Shannon (Double Trouble, Johnny Winter, many more)
Les Claypool Dave Holland Victor Krauss Phil Lesh Jack Casady Tony Scherr Mingus Oteil Burbridge theres a lot more that I can't name at the moment...
John Entwistle(The Who) Jack Casady(Jefferson Airplane) Jack Bruce(Cream Mel Shacher(Grand Funk Railroad) Greg Ridley(Humble Pie) John Paul Jones(Led Zeppelin) James Jamerson(Legendary Motown Bassist) Billy Sheehan(Mr.Big,David Lee Roth Band,etc...) Geezer Butler(Black Sabbath)
jaco, victor wooten, phil lesh, mike gordon, oteil burbridge, bootsy collins, john paul jones... samson, why don't you like les?
wooten is a showoff... and thats all he does... claypool just does the same thing over and over again. duke of prunes and samson have it right on
Jaco did show off, but unlike Wooten, he did a lot of really tasteful beautiful tunes, and he could be subtle but still interesting. Wooten's got the chops but not the style...
I was surprised I didn't see this response earlier. Jaco was AMAZING! None other like him--wooten, yea a show-off but he earned that right. He isn't called the man with eight arms for nothing. Seen him live a few times--blew mind fuckin mind! The style of music wasnt necessarily my fave--but his talent drew me in on another level.
My favorite is Mike Gordon and Phil Lesh alternating every millisecond so you can never quite tell which is my favorite, its such a quick change back and forth....
Jack Bruce(Cream) John Paul Jones(Led Zeppelin) John Entwistle(The Who) Geezer Butler(Black Sabbath) I'm sure I've forgotten someone I really admire, but I cant quite remember at the mo...
