A shotgun is an EXCELLENT home defense choice.

Is this a shotgun or an assault weapon?

They could obliterate some school children with no problem at all.

Wouldn't you say that the shotguns you are posting have some of the qualities of an assault weapon?

Another murder a few blocks from me the other night.

It's causing me to waiver on this issue. I was pretty pro gun until Las Vegas, and then I started to do some rethinking. Now, I don't know. The world is a dangerous place. People should be allowed to defend themselves.

With normal guns, and after a proper background check and training/instructions.

My point is be careful what you suggest is an OK weapon. An AR-15 can be used for home defense as well. Yet its plain to see that a "shotgun" can be considered an assault weapon. If you think an AR-15 kills people well, wait til Johnny takes dads 30.06 deer rifle to school when he loses his cool and decides to start killing. Those shotguns, at their core, is the same OLD FASHIONED ones that have been around for years. They just figure out how to make them do more.

There have been a lot of terms used in these threads that try and make some point, but they are being used very loosely due to lack of education. To say a SHOTGUN is OK and an AR-15 is not opens up a lot of broad areas that don't really address a problem. If you ban an AR-15, it won't stop the shootings. There will just be a new weapon of choice for them. But I'm all for banning them to show that they have become too easy and popular in the hands of the wrong people. Try legislating a shotgun (there is some in place for them) or a deer rifle next.

If you think the answer is to provide legal ownership to limited to black powder muskets as away to protect ones self, you will have a tough battle to win.

'At their core' are the keywords of that sentence.

The only good reason to improve a shotgun is to improve the current quality. Not to make them do more. That way its the manufacturers and gun fans own fault if more and more guns get (rightfully) restricted or even banned. Seems a no brainer.

And now you start to see that there is the horrible school shooting that make the news where 17 people get killed at one event. Yet I'd bet that in Chicago last week alone there are more than 17 killed with more than one person doing the killing.

Now multiply that across X number of cities and sooner or later you start to realize that crime isn't going away, it gets closer.

Yeah well we here don't live in those societies. Call it what you like. We have a violent crime problem in this country. For whatever reason people seem to want to come live here so that's a fact of our nation. I don't know if they flock to your country like they do here but in reality we have to deal with what we see all around us. Some people are here to kill others. Rapidly and with little meaningful reasons much of the time.

In most free markets, a product is only sold if they fulfill a need that buyers want it for. Otherwise they go away. So while you may not see the reason yourself, you aren't part of the equation.

    Remember folks

It was an AR-15 that stopped the Sutherland Springs shooter from claiming more victims

Keyword here is most. Part of the popularity stayed in your country because americans have been indoctrinated in believing their cultural identity depends on guns. They obviously don't keep american society more save. As is easily shown by comparing it to other western societies.

That doesn't always say much. What if it happened to be a bazooka. Should americans all embrace the usefulness of it and have it become more mainstream because it happened to save people once.

And again since everyone seems to want to come to this Western society, they come here knowing that America supports gun ownership as a means to protect oneself. False or not it's part of our society. Take them away from law abiding citizens and watch what happens to our crime rate.

Let me guess, you're guessing at all of that; and that's not a guess. First of all, I don't own an AR-15, and so I don't fear anyone taking it away. Your mention of my mentioning that handguns are the weapons most used by mass shooters is true, but I have no idea what you are hoping to convey by mentioning it. And why are you asking me if handguns should be regulated?

I don't think the average immigrant sees your country's gun culture as a pro.

You're generalizing your convo partner's argument out of context again.
There are people with gun permits here too. There is a big range between improved gun control and no guns at all for law abiding citizens. The improving of public safety in your society lies somewhere in the middle of how other western societies deal with guns and your society's current situation.

To state that in an all inclusive answer depends on a lot of details. But a lot of suggestions have already been made. Its one of the main reasons this discussion is still going, as most people in this thread seem to agree that some improvements in gun control are in order.

Okay. Well, maybe you have an answer for this question:

Who determines what a normal and abnormal gun are?
