Mr Manafort and Donald Trump Jr were among those present at the discussion with a Kremlin-linked lawyer who promised the president's son political dirt on Hillary Clinton.

The White House has repeatedly denied the president dictated a misleading statement by his son, which claimed the meeting was about Russian adoption policy.

But in a memo this January to the Mueller team, first reported on Saturday by the New York Times, the White House reversed that position.

"The president dictated a short but accurate response… on behalf of his son, Donald Trump, Jr," the White House acknowledged in a private letter to investigators.

The confidential note to Mr Mueller came despite numerous denials over the past year that he had "dictated" the statement.

On Monday, Trump spokeswoman Sarah Sanders declined to explain the discrepancy.

"Simultaneously, Sarah Huckabee Sanders told a crowd of reporters inside the White House that the administration reconciled its belief that bakers have the right to refuse to bake cakes for gay weddings with its belief that football players cannot kneel during the anthem as follows: “The president doesn’t think this is an issue simply of free speech. He thinks it’s about respecting the men and women of our military; it’s about respecting our national anthem.”

For such a brief statement, this contains an impressive quantity of evasions. First, the protests are not directed at the anthem but at police brutality, using the anthem as a point of demonstration. Second, the national anthem is an expression of patriotism, not support for the armed forces in particular. And third, even if Sanders was correct about both of the above points, once she has conceded that the issue is about a point of view — respecting the armed forces — then she has subverted her claim that it isn’t about free speech. Respecting the armed forces is also a point of view. She is demanding that players obey that view. Obviously, nobody who is trying to prevent free speech thinks what they’re doing is about free speech. They think it’s about the beliefs they’re trying to compel.

The afternoon at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue was heavy on compulsory authoritarian demonstrations of ersatz nationalism, and light on genuine patriotism. The current, diseased state of the Republican Party and its Trump-era Kulturkampf was on perfect display."

 

But free speech requires the ability to not respect things. Effective protest means you are challenging the status quo. It can never work if you have blind patriotism. In fact it's probably people who care for a country the most who bother to protest. If everyone went Trump style we would be kneeling to Queen Elizabeth now. I mean god choices the queen. Why should we disrespect both him and her by not being a loyal subject of the British Empire? Kind of disrespectful to throw all the tea in a harbor no? You are not god.

What a moron. Basically we can not have anyone feelings hurt especial y the solider. How many days do veterans get kissing their ass? The culture of worship around them is unlike anywhere else in the world. Seems many in the military support free speech and I would say to those that don't you are clearly a grunt who never had any idea what it was all about.

The whole thing is a distraction. Trump is saying I am not the issue but here is a fellow American they are the real problem because they do not do what I say. Does not help you Donnie the lies are catching up.
