On the issue of generators, the best performing are diesel. And diesel fuel is actually pretty easy to make. Ideally you'd keep a diesel generator and a gasoline generator (which would also run on alcohol or methane). Don't get me wrong, I absolutely believe in solar. I have just over 700 watts of panels, but at this latitude and the encroaching Georgia forest, we rarely see over 400 (that's also how fucked the solar ratings system actually is. And this is using an MPPT charge controller.
