I don't know if something similar is going on in Canada, but in the US middle aged white men are dying at a high rate. Mostly suicide, alcoholism, or OD.

Ann Case and Angus Deaton, both professors at Princeton, wrote a paper about this (Deaton also won a Nobel Prize). I think the paper just covers the increase in overall white mortality, but it's always a big majority of men who die from these things. They show a huge spike in deaths for whites, especially working class whites, while mortality is declining for all other groups. More than half a million deaths, virtually no media coverage (at least not the race/gender component).

Anyway, I guess your buddy could have died of anything, sorry for getting off topic.
