Or just wait till the ocean rises and they flood out.

I just checked out some home prices in the Panama City area, including Lynn Haven. It's a nice spot and lots of the homes there are selling for pennies on the dollar because of the Hurricane damage! We could realistically get one of these damaged homes on an acre or two and have a nice place with a big garden and a shop type of garage. Two or three guys could fix a house like that. I would want to use lag bolts and lots of water proof liquid nails glue to hold the roof down during the next storm. I would want is back farther from the shore in case of another storm surge. We could even build a good high foundation after we jack up the house with bottle jacks. After that you have to lag bolt down into the foundation, or use all thread in the concrete to bolt it down. It's not rocket science. The only thing we would lose in a big storm would be the solar panels unless you bring them inside? Maybe we could have them on wheels?

What ever you did would have to meet zoning requirements... all of a sudden it becomes "rocket science" or it's equivalent.

Mister T, we are talking about the deep south here! Do you really think they have complicated zoning, or just want to keep black and brown people out?

Actually... you were talking about Florida. Don't pretend it's rural south, it's not.

Mister T, lots of my southern friends who lived in Colorado after military service to go to Colorado State University told me that part of Florida is known as the Hill Billy Riviera. The area includes places like Pensacola, Fort Walton Beach, Laguna Beach, and Panama City. It is really nice because the beaches are very wide, not like the short beaches at places like Daytona. The sand in the Hill Billy Riviera is very white, much different from other parts of Florida. It's also cheaper to visit, because Yankee tourists over look it and drive down to Sarasota and Fort Myers. Anyway, I've been there many times. There are racist Christian Fundamentalists in the area, like in De Funiak Springs. That one preacher who burned Korans a few years ago is in that area. There of-course lots of nice people too. I mentioned this part of Florida to Snowtigger because of the affordability. There are lots of good deals to be had after that storm. I'm really not sure that I would like to live there all year round, because their hot summers don't offer a dry heat, like in Pahrump Nevada.

Ocean water could be run through a small desalination plant which is operated by solar power. Richard Branson used such a plant on his Decker's Island retreat. He told me that after running the ocean water through it, salt could be detected in a taste test. I am now thinking any one living near the coastline in a place like Florida would have to desalinate the salty water twice through the evaporation process. The good thing is solar power is always available. A commune could collect rain water and drill for ground water to be filtered and used in washing and gardening. Drinking water needs to be more pure for health reasons. To be healthy, our Hippy people need to avoid food and water which is supplied by corrupt Republican types who are only interested in making money off us.

I was jus t thinking some wells might be contaminated, so started thinking about water filtering and distilling methods. In this age we need to start thinking about ways to clean the ocean water. Some places in the Middle East use a "membrane" method but they tell me you can still taste the salt.

    Dont forget to remineralize.
    Also, check out Air wells.
Very old school tech, but with our more modern ability to move air around, "maybe" building them in bermed structures or caves will make them much more efficient being effectively chilled all day & night.

There are several ways to re-mineral the safe water. I was taught in Colorado (1) 60 micron filter (2) 120 micron filter (3) Charcoal filter and that should give you safe water. So, if you start with Evaporated-distilled you can go straight to the re-mineral. Some people like to add chlorine but I lived in Cache Le Poudre canyon for a long time and never used chlorine in our well water. Some people use the cistern method to collect snow melt and rain water. I think it is OK for washing and flushing the toilet but not safe enough for drinking/cooking. One time I saw a field mouse in a buddy's cistern when we took off the lid-cover. So a sheet metal tank mounted high in the house could be a safe bet and it could gravity feed down to where you need it.

The pics show a device that looks like it pulls well water with the force from the wind. Can you tell how it pulls it from the air? The H2O contraptions on a yacht does actually pull water from the humid air by way of condensation. I've always known there is also plenty condensation in the ground. So, that machine might do it both ways? Is it a BI-Functional machine?

It basically uses geothermal cooling to chill the incoming air driven by the turbine down into its reservoir, like what I'm suggesting on a much smaller scale with the large air well in a bermed structure.
But sure, something similar could be rigged up to keep a cistern or aquaponics pond filled via wind power?

It really does sound like a smart idea. I'm still in the same place where I started. There haven't been any on here or Intentional Communities who want to start a commune. I 'd like to try it but I'm not getting younger. Maybe I'll just draw pictures at the old folks home and show the others?

Well I just got to Az in October and the Gf is coming down in a month with Biz. plans that fit rather tightly with my Mesquite & etc. farming goal SO hopefully there will be funding on our end for such an endeavor "soon".
Land around Marana isn't as cheap as I'd like it but it's near hills meaning lots of washes to catch H2O for Orchards during the monsoon season ofc I hear a new Interstate is being pondered that could cut through some of the prime spots I've been eyeballing BUT might just end up a couple miles away which would make it an ideal perch for a Farmers market / Cafe I think? Time will tell, but the one sure thing is whatever it ends up being it will involve money for the foreseeable future so thats what I'm working towards for the moment.

Have you looked at Oracle and Globe. There are some inexpensive places up there in the "High" country. That means snow melt, more water, cooler summers! And it still get more sun than northern states.
