I agree: It's the nature of the people who live there! It's all about good intentions toward our fellow human beings. That why I was attempting to get Like Minded people together here on HF. I am a civil rights activist, an environmental activist, an animal lover, an organic food lover, and I think Ry Cooder is a great guitar player; consequently, I'll be calling our commune a commune. I already asked Snowtigger about several official names. Now I'm thinking about making the official name Earth People's Camp! I plan on asking Scratcho with help if the place needs a roof tear off. And I can remodel the bathroom. After that I'll put up a sign up-front which reads : NO REPUBLICANS ALLOWED & All Hippies please use side door.
Snowtigger has some info on this. There might be something available from Intentional Communities . org? I say we talk with a local lawyer so we can be sure we are compliant with the local laws. You can just bet the local Republicans will be very upset about people living together and having a good time!
I've been looking at a few here in the Midwest which have 1 to 3 acres. I didn't look at bigger lots because I would need a big ride mower and do things all by myself if no others are around.
Joe Walsh and Phil Keagy are great guitar players from Ohio. Ohio gave us Dennis Kucinich. Rick Derringer and the McCoys were from Fort Recovery, Ohio. Bull Island Rock festival in 1971 was in Ohio. You wouldn't know any of it today.
I would go along with female goats. The male goats pee on themselves and stink something royal. I also wish I could have strong solid and determined women with organic gardening knowledge. I'm good certain plants but not others. I'm a real good cook and can do many international dishes. What do you think about our requiring members to take an oath to never vote Republican as long as they live in our commune?
I'm a proud Democrat who has spent the last two years trying to educate people in my area. In vain. While WA goes blue, the southeastern part of my beautiful state is RABID RED. Since my bullshit cup has finally overflowed, I'm totally on board with the oath! And yes, no male goats. Where I live now - my friend and landlady has a cat that marks EVERYTHING. I can't stand it and I love cats. I refer to him as Piss Boy. As far as organic gardening goes - I pull my weeds rather than adding chemicals. I'm into composting and rain barrels.
Been thinking on something said earlier... You said the group needs strong women. I hope that same rule applies to potential men. And in case anyone is wondering... I'm interested in this group because I'm looking for safety and company in an ever-increasing scary world. I don't need and therefore am not seeking a "relationship." I have divorced myself from most of my family, including my son. It was a hard choice but their indifference and harsh judgement were just too toxic to me. I thought I HAD found that safe place when I moved in with my friend. Instead, I found yet ANOTHER place where 95% of ANY work somehow became my job. I pay rent here, a fair amount, but I am the ONLY one who cleans here. I trim the shrubs, tend the vegies, care for the animals, do most of the cooking, trash detail, litter boxes, all the laundry, housework, etc while my friend sits on her butt in front of her computer. I will not go into another situation like this. I hope this message is received as I intended... Just an FYI. Peace.
Well, guess it depends on what you call a commune. I've lived in groups for periods of time, none called themselves a commune. I wasn't talking about "clashing personalities" as poisonous personalities. A good clash can be stimulating and helpful but one conniving person who into greed, anger and hatred can wreck a group situation very quickly. Having a "Charter" an be problematic, if you have a conniving "lawyer" in the group, who feels finding loopholes that benefit themselves is the the name of the game. I would recommend shared guiding principles that everyone in the group believe in.
I know a young lady in Durango that would wonder why you feel the need for a lawn, when weeds are delicious, healthy and don't need "mowing".
Why goats, when sheep are more pleasant, do an excellent job of "mowing" and provide wool for many purposes?
I am looking at several places in Indiana and Michigan right now. The weeds here can get out of hand quick. In Durango what you described is realistic. Here you've gotta learn from the Amish. I can see sheep and goats running free along with a dog or two; but, we'll need a fence so they don't get hit by a car. The places I'm looking at are just a few acres, because that's all I can afford at the moment.
I know what you are saying. I used to haul apples from Selah, Yakima, Tonasket, Oroville, Wenatchee, and other places. I used to haul French Fries out of Walla Walla. I made deliveries in Pullman, Pasco, Kennewick, and Spokane. Eastern Washington is agricultural in a similar way Indian is agricultural. They grow lots of stuff here. The advantage is I can get a place for a quarter of the price here or in Michigan. Washington prices are way out of my sight.
Poison ivy, Bush honeysuckle, wild rose, Autumn Olive and others are not edible and extremely invasive... Thus the need for mowing.
I understand exactly what you said. I've had four people come here to live with me in the last four years. The first guy who I had known for years from northern Colorado/southern Wyoming did little work and stayed drunk for days on end. I helped him get a job and he disappeared after taking a cash advance from that employer. I had to stand good for the advance because the employer was my friend. The second one to come here was a disabled guy in a walker/wheel chair. I had met him in Arcata California. He was cool and took off for a Rainbow Family festival. The third was a woman from Kentucky who ended up stealing $500 from me because of her pain pill issue. She got busted at a local store here for shoplifting. Then the cops found out she had papers on her in Kentucky. So, yes, we need to make sure who the others are and what their code of ethics is all about. I've said many times on here: This is about OLDER HIPPIES who want to live with their own kind in peace and harmony. I am not interested in a party house. Concerning the men, I would expect the wood choppers to step up right away. This has to be equality Hippy style.
