Well it looks like I've got something in common with your Catahula. (insert cheeky grin here) I've never heard of those breeds, but I believe you Storm. I hate that horrible people have ruined so many good dogs. But I totally understand. Where I live now, there is a neighbor who has a stunningly beautiful Sheppard. He flings himself against their wooden fence if you walk by across the street. Some of the slats need replacing. That dog scares the shit out of me! He'd rip out your throat if given the chance.
I got stuck behind an Amish buggy on my to Arkansas. Recently weren't some Amish killed by a guy with his Red truck? So sad.
Yes, that was in Michigan not far from here. It does not happen as often as before when they refused to use lights on their buggy. Back in the 70s they had some real bad accidents. I like the Amish because they don't just have fresh veggies. They also will butcher a lamb for you if you want and they have some real fresh eggs. They are great people and very religion oriented. Some of the younger ones drink too much. The old ones are very honorable.
One of the things I noticed driving through Amish country in Missouri was how pretty their farms were. Well maintained, with no unsightly "dead" farm machinery lying around (like a lot of their "modern" neighbors. I did however read about how some of them abuse their horses. Hope they got a handle on that - it gives good people a bad rap.
Animals are just tools for them... It's part of their religion that only people have souls, animals don't. I mean I like the Amish to a point, but some of their lifestyle and belief systems.... not so much.
Agreed. Certain aspects of said lifestyle are admirable, particularly how they pitch in to help the group. But I couldn't live like that. Ever.
The Amish here who I do know love their horses. When I lived in Colorado I always did read in the newspaper about "Wannabe Ranchers" who owned ten acres and a trailer but did not have enough to buy hay for their animals. The picture in the paper always showed horses with ribs showing under loose hide … starved. Here in Indiana there is plenty grass for horses, cows, and sheep. I just don't have enough money to buy such a place. To buy a bigger place the others who do want to join with me to set up an Old Hippy Commune would have to come to bat and get with the program.
I've heard about Amish cruelty to animals but never seen it. Zane Grey wrote about the Mormons being cruel to their horses; but, I never saw that either.
No. I'm talking about how strict they are. I cannot even remotely imagine anyone, especially a woman, who speaks their own mind even remotely fitting in with the Amish community. How they choose to live is not my business. And like I said earlier, much of what they do I admire. But how they treat their horses? And their women? Not so much. I mean... if you think about the horses for instance. You can wrap it up in the pretty paper of religion and stick a bow on it, but abuse is still abuse.
I can look. I did see A LOT of places for sale up near Coulee and even Odessa (really cool little town, saw some hippy-ish folks walking around when I stopped going through). But pretty much out in the middle of wheat field country. Pretty country around Milton F. I've always loved the Blue Mountains, and they are nice and close... I'll get back to you. Oh, and I was totally serious about meeting. I have a Prius and tons of time.
So JUST found a cool site for searching for real estate. Can even search for cost of living of places. In case you don't know it....niche.com Interesting reading. Going back there now.
There are some cheaper homes, four bedroom average. Older farmhouses. A couple of foreclosures right now in Milton Freewater.
I am willing to meet soon. This week my banker will be giving me the mortgage approval letter and I am still looking at Michigan. I was in the Northwest in 2015 and loved it. I stayed in Missoula for two months but that got expensive too. I really want to find a place on an acre or two for under a $100k in one of these little towns. Down around Kingman AZ there a cheap places but no water. There you have to haul it in. In the Midwest there is plenty water. So, I'm still looking.
On occasion there's too much water... Get a place on top of a hill. My place is right around 1300 feet above sea level. In Ohio that basically means everything is down hill from here.
