The plot of Galaxy Quest. Or at least the perception of the aliens in it.

I have a similar theory for why you never see a bathroom. The human body evolved to the point of being so efficient as to not create waste, either that or the replicator creates food that way.

When you drive into a car park in London, ANPR cameras automatically show your car registration. This is just the first step testing of facial recognition technology on a moving target.
Police are also testing it to see if the details of a criminal on heir data-base flashes up as they drive by. Don't bother to ask them about it, they will deny everything.
While I want to see the bad guys caught and technology of this type could save your life by bringing up your medical records after an accident or if you collapse in the street, it could be very dangerous in the wrong hands.
Remember the words from Die Flededmaus ...... :yum: It's nice to have a wife in the house, as long as she's not your own. :yum:

China has already implemented facial recognition software at pedestrian crossings in certain cities. If you (or more specifically a chinese citizen) crosses while its red light they automatically get fined. You can easily see how this is gonna take a wrong turn sometime in the future...

Yes, after a system such as this has been put in place, all it takes is one election to go wrong, and this system, and its control, will fall in to the hands of fascists. After that, it'll be a very miserable business being a dissident. You literally cannot hide or escape, if somebody wants to fuck you up.

    Something to keep in mind.

The biggest threat to everyday freedom in the UK is posed by the local authorities who have access to government systems. Litter wardens are the worst, with an £80 fine for dropping a sweet wrapper or cigarette butt, Just think what they could do with an automated system,
Traffic wardens are a nightmare. A few year ago, a doctor was fined for stopping at an accident where a person was seriously injured. their was no doubt that he saved the persons life, but the council would not cancel his parking fine.
Automation in cars is something that we take for granted, but the sat-nav knows your speed and the government owns the satellites, just think about it.
With the proposed new pollution laws making it an offence to drive your children to school if the school is within 2 miles. the authorities will have a heyday. You do not need a sat-nav, since modern cars transmits signals from the engine computer all the time. It will be the future of road tax soon, where you will pay by the mile and type of road.

We, here at my end are not quite there yet, but our leaders do entertain fantasies of adopting similar policies. All in the name of greater good, of course. As always. The GPS road tax in particular has been a popular thought to them. Hell, I'll be holding on to my aging Mazda and my old, Symbian-era Nokia phones to resist all this tracking BS as long as I can. Just to spite this type of short-sighted thinking and planning.

My concern is that the voter base all over Europe is starting to get upset by all these silly plans, if the recent polls are anything to go by. If they start protest voting some of the more unsavory parties and individuals, I fear that we may see some very interesting regimes in the near future, with damage to match.

My reply: I can't resist it. Why not? They likely would think of it as perfectly natural for you and never give it a second thought.

An unidentified bacterial lifeform has been detected in your thongs. They have been transported to the quarantine department.

Dang, Asmodean....you have an enviably creative wit!

As for the OP's original question, I think they wear shoes because, like everything else, it's in the script.

In the final 2-part episode of ST-TNG, Picard admits he likes "running around the ship in his bare feet".

The only one who wouldn't be wearing shoes inside the ship is George Takei

A lot of the "aliens" were without shoes.
They broke enough "rules" I will give them a pass on this.

I think that this should be discussed in some detail. But I'm not the authority on barefooting; not to mention barefooting in outer space. ;)
