Sorry @6-eyed shaman and @************ . I shouldn't have called you out by name. That was rude. I didn't mean to imply you two specifically beleive whatever, but rather the "side" you argue for

some of the tags for this thread...

  3. I don't argue for any side, but I will readily point out when either side screws up. And business is booming!

  4. So add some good ones.

  5. I think the characterization is where it loses me. As if it was some kind of conspiracy to shut out potential voters.

For example, the article calls this out: "Minority voters disproportionately lack ID. Nationally, up to 25% of African-American citizens of voting age lack government-issued photo ID, compared to only 8% of whites." It's nothing more than an assumption at this point since the information is 14 years old. It would insinuate that Obama didn't address it if I wanted to be poignant about it.

There are a raft of similar examples in this cherry-picked collection of old news. It makes no mention of places like Texas that turned this around years ago.

Another assumption is that the voter ID laws are somehow the cause of lower turnout. Just saying that implies a LOT of not so good scenarios that might have someone avoiding a polling place. It varies from someone trying to vote in multiple precincts to someone who has a warrant out for them. But without more actual facts, instead of packing an article with opinion, what can be concluded? That there was a problem. We already knew that.

But is it still an actual problem or just a matter of perception? We'll never know from this article nor from the Brennan Center study.

There's plenty of evidence that lots of people on the left oppose voter ID. You don't have to look very far to find examples of left wing people opposing ID laws by calling them racist. I could name off a few members on here who've expressed their opposition to them as well.

Lifting the rules on required voter ID would allow for much easier voter fraud. Minors and non-citizens (especially illegals) would be allowed to vote undetected. This is the whole idea because these groups are more likely to lean left.

Don't sweat it :). I was asking for clarification on your question is all

Voter Identification is fine. It should happen at 18 and be automatic and free.

What I don't like is charging people for it, which is an illegal poll tax. And constantly sending out voter mandatory voter re-registration and purging polls. I got one yesterday that was sent out in like January?

It's lucky I didn't throw it away accidentally. 99% of my paper mail is junk.

Voting in this country is a stupid hassle that happens on Tuesdays, and it is the conservatives who favor that status quo.

A state issued ID card is $12 where I live and is good for 4 years. But yeah, the state should just issue them automatically.

  9. Agreed, especially for unemployed people or people on government assistance. Without an ID, how can they purchase beer?

Or how can they get work and stop being unemployed? working in the US requires proof of identification and citizenship.

Watching people 18-20 trying to buy tobacco with no id is very odd. ITs like a very large time gap tbh..

Oh... I see what they did there.

I would flag it! :) Is that a regulatory overreach or maybe just part of running a responsible platform? I don't know. I think maybe it's a good policy because while Bloomberg's play was a familiar and obvious one, it can become a serious misrepresentation pretty quickly.

And his campaign did that? That's definitely a different take on that particular event... I saw it play out sort of like that and how no one could compete with his statement, but there were a million things going on. I'm shocked and dismayed that he thinks his candidacy is still viable though. He' out! :)

But you do need to have an ID to vote which is my point. I don't need to show my ID in order to vote, but I had to in order to register to vote. It's like I was carded at the door but republicans feel we should be carded every time we order a drink. and the real problem I see with that is let's say you're down to your last $20 and you can either eat or get a state ID so you can vote. It discriminates against poor voters. It's basically a polling tax which feels disgustingly un American.

  20. So the "real" problem is a contrived scenario? Anyone that poor qualifies for a waiver. You're still grousing about the way it used to be, decades ago. None of this is true today. Even the poorest in the US can get an ID card and will need one for government benefits anyway.

Your claim is a mountain of pure straw.
