  2. Yea, that's a weak point for every nation. The water in Venice is so clear right now you can see fish swimming. And that's because there are no power boats churning everything up (and leaking oil/fuel into the water).

In the US it's illegal for industrial plants to dump untreated waste into waterways or estuaries. Plants that use water for cooling must return that water to the environment at the same temperature as it was received. If it's just a few degree warmer, the wildlife reacts. Often it's to congregate in the warmer water, but it upsets their overall balance and attracts predators.

Also, the air has to be cleaned first. Otherwise the shit just rains down into the rivers.

A bigger problem is the runoff from food production getting into the rivers. Fertilizers, steroids, animal shit, animal piss and byproduct waste all seem to find their way into the rivers. What they SHOULD be doing is composting some of the waste and using it to fertilize the western deserts. The water runoff should be captured and at least filtered through a pond system.

This virus seems to be giving nature a break. I wonder if the Venetians will come to demand an end to power boat traffic. It would make their city so much nicer.

  3. Yea, I've heard of this guy. He was also pushing for IGCC coal conversions, which are the practical future. I didn't know he had a biology degree. It might explain why he was so hip to conservation efforts in the past.

But it's also obvious he's been kept on a leash for a long time (as a "lobbyist").

So you're absolutely right to point this guy out on that basis. As for Trump, I only see a pass-through relationship. Murray is the one to watch. Why did they want him in that seat?

Coal will be with us a lot longer than Covid-19.

I agree with this for the most part. Yes, it's illegal for industrial plants to dump untreated waste into waterways, but they do it anyway, without consequences.

If all government regulations regarding pollution and safety were removed it would take corporations about 14.7 seconds before they just started dumping raw sludge out the back door. Just like they were doing before we had government regulations.

    Oh, but "regulations=bad"....

ad hominem attakcs (with their own hint of racism) prove my point.

I'm having trouble believing you think this is a smart response. You are shutting down and being rude because you have no answer.

Based on what I read about Australia I am not surprised you don't get it. You have your own soft racism and white men acting like it's OK. Just not with black people as much as here.

  9. States are closer to the shit than Washington. If the onus was put back on the states and the EPA was no longer available for them as an excuse for inaction, I think we'd see positive change.

  10. I think I see the problem. He's joking.

We'll see. (Well not me, I'll be dead, that'll be 2120.)
China, Japan, and South Korea seem to be among the only countries ramping up or not declining in the use if coal. China's current five year plan is attempting to close coal plants and India has a moratorium on new coal plant approvals until 2027.

Coal gas produces its own pollutants in the form of ash, some types of slag, carbon dioxide, mercury, arsenic, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides, all of which need to be processed.

I understand that coal can wait.

Are we able to rely on China to meet their CO-2 emissions targets? The climate depends on it.

  16. Most of that is from burning coal in a furnace, a horribly polluting, but weirdly efficient device. They grind the coal into a black baby powder and then blast it into the combustion chamber with steam or compressed air. The tiny particles burn instantly and completely. Catching the waste requires a bag house and flue gas desufurization as well as catalytic control.

Synthetic gas is extracted from coal using superheated steam in a containment. The only thing that comes out is what they want to come out, the rest can be sequestered. And yes, the Chinese are shoveling coal at an increasing pace, much of it purchased from the US (oddly enough) to run all those factories that were moved over there.

You'll never hear me claim that coal is in any way "clean". That's a stupid political/marketing slogan. So is "clean", "Natural" gas, primarily methane. Anything we burn pollutes.

Due to the Covid -19, much of China's industries have closed, therefore its likely that they've already met their CO-2 emissions target.

Very sad to see hardcore capitalism clashing with morals. This is America in a nut shell.

Trump Toys With a Let-Them-Die Response to the Pandemic

Fox News has already helped poison policy on the pandemic. The network was a major promoter of the idea that warnings about a pandemic were a “hoax” designed to derail Trump’s presidency. Trump initially went along with that until he was persuaded by a dissident in the Fox ranks, Tucker Carlson, to take the pandemic seriously.

But it’s clear that an influential faction at Fox still believes the coronavirus threat is oversold. On Friday, a bevy of Fox personalities, including Laura Ingraham and Brit Hume, were hawking on twitter a Medium post by Republican operative Aaron Ginn arguing that the government was over-reacting to the coronavirus. Ginn is not an epidemiologist, and his post was riddled with analytical errors. It was quickly taken down by Medium, but not before being seen by million

Ever so slightly off topic but ... Why do people who dislike the President keep referring to him as "Trump"? Like him or loathe him Donald Trump is President of The United States of America. If you can't show the President respect then show the office of President respect. Please.:persevere:
