    Steam trains are fantastic. I rode them in the 40s. All that external machinery and the noise! When the ones I rode or saw leave the station, when they would get ready to go, the engineers would spin the wheels like a kid with a hot rod. Impressive!

    I rode them when I was young. Steel wheels on steel rails is pretty slippery. When the wheels spin, sand is dropped on the track to give the wheel traction.
