Trump calls Fauci remarks on risks to reopening schools, economy unacceptable

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday described as not acceptable a warning given by top US infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci this week about the dangers of reopening the economy and schools too quickly.

"To me it's not an acceptable answer, especially when it comes to schools," Trump told reporters at the White House when asked about Fauci's warnings to senators on Tuesday about the risks of reopening the schools and economy too soon.

Fauci, who directs the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, also warned that a premature lifting of lockdowns could lead to additional outbreaks of the deadly coronavirus, which has killed more than 82,000 people in the United States and brought the economy to its knees.

Trump, in contrast, said on Wednesday the only thing that would be acceptable would be professors or teachers "over a certain age" not holding classes. "I think they ought to take it easy for another few weeks," he added.

The president, who previously made the strength of the economy central to his pitch for re-election in November, has encouraged states to reopen businesses and schools that were shuttered to halt the spread of the highly contagious respiratory disease.

Fauci, 79, a proponent of the lockdowns, has become a target for criticism from the American far right and online conspiracy theorists since he made statements about the outbreak that were at odds with Trump's.

In April, Trump retweeted a call to fire Fauci, after the doctor said lives could have been saved if the country had shut down sooner, spurring speculation his days in the administration could be numbered.

"Anthony is a good person, a very good person, I've disagreed with him," Trump said in an interview earlier on Wednesday with Fox Business Network's "Mornings with Maria," repeating his refrain that the country must reopen.

"We want to do it safely, but we also want to do it as quickly as possible. ... We have to get it open. I totally disagree with him on schools," Trump said.

Asked about Trump's comments, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio told CNN that Fauci was "sounding an honest voice of caution and I share his view."

"I think we have to be very careful about the steps we take."

Parents, hospitals and clinics should expect to see more cases of a mystifying condition that seems to be affecting children after a bout with Covid-19,
doctors said Wednesday.

The condition, called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, appears to be a post-viral syndrome, said Dr. Jeffrey Burns, a critical care specialist at Boston Children's Hospital who has been coordinating a global group of doctors who compare notes on the condition.

Doctors are investigating cases in at least 150 children, most of them in New York. But a survey finds hospitals and clinics in at least 17 states and Washington, DC are checking into suspected cases.
"This multisystem inflammatory syndrome is not directly caused by the virus," Burns said,. "The leading hypothesis is that it is due to the immune response of the patient."

Yes, I did complain about the lock-down. Being a sensible person, had I developed any of the known symptoms of the virus, I, of course, would quarantine myself for the requisite number of days until the virus had passed. What I do object to is being compulsorily shut in.

 

I tend to agree with you. Churches are a con, mostly for money these days.

The problem with Covid is the way it defies how we have traditionally handled sickness. You can be infected and free of symptoms for a couple of weeks. So if you wait for symptoms before you isolate, it's already 2 weeks too late for everyone you have exposed.

The government's response is to play it weirdly safe to the extreme. But their reasoning is easy to sort out, they want to protect the economy and the government (which will fail as the economy fails). If they let the disease wipe out the expected millions in the US, faith in government will become a joke and America will return to the wild west. Attempts to control people by enforcing house arrest is a finite strategy that can't possibly be expected to last (no matter what the conspiracy theorists draw as 1984 parallels).

There's just too many people for that kind of control to last. Unless, of course, it can be sold with bread and circuses.

The mask isn't to protect you, but to protect people you come in contact with.

 

For me a mask or covering your face with a scarf, handkerchief, etc.. means a train robbery is going to go down, especially if they are on horses outside the train! If I am in a bank or store, it means a bank robbery is about to go down or robbery, potential that violence is going to break out!

The mask does little for the wearer, but it is indeed a symbol as well. If you're not wearing one it's easy to assume you don't care if or who you might infect. That is, if you're dealing with a real virus. Consider how many people influenza killed after WW1, even with so much of the population wearing masks (which provide little protection in a crowded city).

But we have a stealth virus now, one that hides for weeks while creating an army of Typhoid Mary clones. Isolation and masks are about the only thing that will work. Ventilators are for extreme cases. And a LOT of people die on ventilators every year, it's a last-ditch therapy, not a first line of defense. Which is why the coverage of ventilator supplies was so stupid and useful only for political bullshit.

I'm staying isolated because I have almost guaranteed exposure potential. But for how long? I can do my job perfectly well from home, but isolation will eventually kill my job off as the company fails. Then what? I go on unemployment and wait a month before I get the first check, which will likely be wrong in some way (Georgia doesn't discriminate against the illiterate, it hires them into government jobs). And of course unemployment demands you actively search for a job and demands proof of this.

If I lose my job, it's time to plant onions and taters while I finish the rainwater filtration system. Maybe I'll open a YT page devoted to suburban survival during a modern depression, since that's where I'll be if I lose a job at this age.

I have an acquaintance who took a spur of the moment road trip from Las Vegas to NYC, to help a friend move out of an apartment. She videoed part of it. She said that in the west, the only state where she saw people wearing masks was in Colorado. Once she crossed the Mississippi River, most people were wearing masks.

 

Now, all of a sudden, you have empathy for Muslim women. That's rich.
