This photo was taken when Churchill visited the east end of London after a night's bombing raid from the Luftwaffe. Stupid sod had the audacity to stand there and say "Britain can take it". My Gran was amongst the crowd of women picking up and rescuing pieces of their shattered homes. They told Churchill in no uncertain terms what he could take and where he could take it to !!!
I’m sure it is beautiful. For many years the U.S. explanation for dropping the bomb was due in part to the huge loss of American lives a ground war would have caused. We now know that that was a lie, a fallacy. With the Russians just days away from launching an invasion, the Japanese knew they couldn’t defeat the enemy of two fronts, so they were ready to surrender unconditionally to the allies. The U.S. knew this and still dropped the bomb(s) Perhaps out of fear the Russians would permanently occupy Japan, and so the cold war began.
The reason I am posting 1940s pics is lest we forget!!! Not to cause ANY upset. I will move on to 1950 I think. Be happy xxxx
Sorry Candy darlin' - was just 'colouring' the photograph you posted - you and I are both cockney east enders and I was trying to explain a little about Churchill's visit to the east end.
