Trump has an extreme tenacity for trying to exonerate himself from his mistakes, whether it's doctoring hurricane charts with a Sharpie pen to try to cover mistakes he made about a hurricane trajectory or promoting medical truthers to try to reverse his erroneous medical claims.

Each attempted correction makes him look worse.

Each attempted fix for his trade wars causes more problems that he tries to remedy with more mistakes (reinstating metals tariffs on Brazil and Argentine to retaliate for alleged currency manipulation after they had made an agreement with Trump; retaliating against Harley-Davidson in another trade-related dispute; retaliating against China again during his trade war for what he calls the China Virus and against the WHO for supposedly being in cahoots with China).

Federal officers to pull out of Portland in a major reversal for Trump administration
Oregon’s governor says local police will guard the courthouse as the president says the pullout will not begin until the city is secure

Federal officers to pull out of Portland in a major reversal for Trump administration

    excerpt:

"“These federal officers have acted as an occupying force, refused accountability, and brought violence and strife to our community,” the governor said. The head of the US homeland security department said agents would stay near the courthouse until they were sure the plan was working.

Donald Trump said the pullout will not begin until the courthouse is protected. “We’re not leaving until they secure their city. We told the governor, we told the mayor: secure your city,” said the president.

But the announcement is a significant retreat by the administration after Trump sent federal forces to Portland at the beginning of July to end months of Black Lives Matter protests he described as having dragged the city into anarchy.

Instead of quelling the unrest, the arrival of paramilitaries fuelled some of the biggest demonstrations since daily protests following the killing of George Floyd, a Black American, by a white police officer in Minneapolis in May."

Trump was heading to Texas for a PR event. That's why he promoted the truther in Texas, funded by a Republican Tea Party group, who espouses alternative medicine and narratives that involve alien sperm.

Vice President Mike Pence held a quiet meeting on Tuesday with a group called America’s Frontline Doctors to discuss the use of unproven anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine in treating COVID-19.

The meeting came as video of a Monday press conference held by the group was going mega-viral online, racking up tens of millions of views and leading to a widespread effort by social media companies to remove the video and penalize some people who shared it, including one of the president’s sons.

Pence’s office did not publicize the meeting nor respond to requests for comment, but several members of the group tweeted Tuesday evening that the meeting had just occurred. “Just finished a great meeting with Vice President Mike Pence and his Chief of StaffWe are doing everything to restore the power of medicine back to doctors. Doctors everywhere should be able to prescribe Hydroxychloroquine without repercussions or obstruction.

The Presidential Election Act, of 1845, says he can't do that.

But we are, after all, talking about Trump... You think something from 1845 is going to get in his way?

Trump and his administration tried to dismiss the uptick in coronavirus cases during the summer as being due to better testing. At the time, the death rate hadn't yet increased significantly.

Herman Cain is an example of the lag time of a few weeks between diagnosis and death.

The lag time is part of why Trump initially had time to deny facts but finally had to admit the reality that the new virus cases are actual events that eventually precipitate morbidity and mortality, not just a mathematical fluke related to better testing

The V-shaped recovery for which Trump had hoped doesn't seem to be happening.

Bleak economic data point to struggles ahead for US economy

    excerpt:

"The grim economic news deepened losses on Wall Street. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down more than 400 points in late-morning trading.

The economic harm from the virus is extending well beyond the United States. On Thursday, Germany reported that its GDP tumbled 10.1% last quarter. It was the biggest such drop on records dating to 1970. And Mexico’s GDP sank 17.3% last quarter, also a record.

The U.S. contraction was driven by a deep pullback in consumer spending, which accounts for about 70% of economic activity. Spending by consumers collapsed at a 34.6% annual rate as travel all but froze and shutdown orders forced many restaurants, bars, entertainment venues and other retail establishments to close.

The plunge in GDP “underscores the unprecedented hit to the economy from the pandemic,” said Andrew Hunter, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics. “We expect it will take years for that damage to be fully recovered.”

A resurgence of viral cases in the South and the West has forced many bars, restaurants, beauty salons and other businesses to close again or reduce occupancy. Between June 21 and July 19, for example, the proportion of Texas bars that were closed shot up from 25% to 73%. Likewise, 75% of California beauty shops were shuttered July 19, up from 40% just a week earlier, according to the data firm Womply."

    That's a shame.

Maybe it'll wake some Republicans up.

Some Republicans, including Trump, are so entrenched in their anti-reason ideologies that they could go so far as to say Herman Cain should have taken remedies prescribed by the person in Texas, whose remarks Trump retweeted, who proffers narratives about demonic sperm and reptile people from another world.

Trump mentioned the economic report that will be released at the end of October. He said he thinks it will be great and just a few days before the election to help him win. It's his Hail Mary.

Polls over the past few decades indicate that most voters are usually already decided by around mid-summer and approval ratings of a president change very little from that point until the election.

It's difficult to rebound from a major economic downturn, a deadly resurging virus, and civil unrest, even with the best economic news at the end of the 4th fiscal quarter in October. One-term presidents Carter and Bush Sr. are two examples.

Even Trump's 2016 win, although it can be considered an outlier, was a very close election for the Great Lakes states which tipped the election in his favor and made it difficult for polls to predict. His electoral college win margin was near the bottom of all presidential elections in the U.S. and he lost the popular vote by about 3 million.
