"Under the new election law, signed by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) last month, it's harder for voters to request and drop off absentee ballots; ballot drop boxes are limited; voters can't be approached and handed food or water while they wait in line to cast their ballots; and the secretary of state is no longer chairman or a voting member of the Georgia State Election Board.

During an interview with CNN on Wednesday, Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan (R) said the restrictions are "the fallout from the 10 weeks of misinformation that flew in from former President Donald Trump. I went back over the weekend to really look at where this really started to gain momentum in the legislature, and it was when Rudy Giuliani showed up in a couple of committee rooms and spent hours spreading misinformation and sowing doubt across, you know, hours of testimony."

 

Georgia had no excuse absentee ballots for 15 years. It ended with the passage of the new voting restriction bill signed by Kemp.

The bill also took authority away from the elected secretary of state (currently Raffensperger who refused to overturn the election for Trump) and transferred it to legislators.

For your all-important national convention, you don't choose extremists on the lunatic fringe as speakers. You choose centrists, people who can rally the disparate caucuses of your party, left, right, and center, around one common goal and candidate; someone who passionately believes in and can articulate your party's core values, beliefs, and aspirations.

Don't for a minute think that Gaetz is some sort of aberration; he fully embodies the values of the modern Republican Party.

Trump and Bolsonaro have a mentality of relying solely on vaccines (that Trump has claimed are due solely to him so he can score political points for himself) to eventually stop the pandemic. In the meantime, they are encouraging people to gather socially without restraint (to score more political points). The Trump administration released a press statement in November 2020 encouraging everyone to gather at homes and churches for the holidays. The winter surge of deaths in 2021 ensued (which some of Trump's supporters blamed on Biden).

The problem with that approach is that the virus spreads readily and mutates within people while the population is waiting to be vaccinated. The variants can potentially reduce the effectiveness of vaccines. Segments of the population that haven't yet been vaccinated are placed at increased risk due to the original virus and variants which may be more contagious and deadly than the original. It makes the battle more difficult, as Brazil is currently learning during its current surge with thousands of coronavirus deaths per day.

 

Adjusted for population, a death toll of 4,000 in a day like Brazil has experienced recently is like 6,200 in the U.S.
