I'm hoping the incident with the Democrats walking out in Texas will help. Yes it's just a stopgap measure, but it seems to be bringing attention to the issue. I am confused. The “US” designation means it is a federal highway. I guess the state receives federal funds for maintenance.

 

Yes, to 491. Been on that road many times. The segment between Gallup, New Mexico and Shiprock, New Mexico is one of the most dangerous roads in the country. The religious folks wanted to change the name because they said the devil was in charge of the highway.

 

All the White Shield Highways are still US HIGHWAYS. US 6, which is known as the Grand Highway of the Republic, starts in CT and is officially the longest road in America. It goes from there through Midwest places like Ohio and Indiana. It goes through Colorado over Loveland Pass then through Utah at Green River. After that it goes through Nevada, right down the Middle of the state. Then it goes through Bishop in California to end near San Diego. US 30 is known as Lincoln Highway and goes from New Jersey to Oregon, right through Fort Wayne Indiana and Cheyenne Wyoming. US 40 is known as The National Highway and runs through Indianapolis and Kansas and Colorado. US 66, perhaps the most famous of all, also runs through many states like New Mexico and ends up as Foothills Boulevard through Rancho Cucamonga and Pasadena.
