Documents reveal new details of Trump political interference in COVID-19 response

    excerpt:

"Top political officials in the Trump White House tried to block public health guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and to eliminate evidence of political interference into scientists' reports on the coronavirus, according to newly released documents from congressional investigators.

The latest documents from a House committee investigating the former administration's response to the pandemic shed additional light on the efforts of some of former President Trump's political appointees to blunt or even block the messages of career officials because they did not align with Trump's rosy projections."

Meadows is trying to appeal to White House norms and traditions to protect Trump from being investigated for his riot at the Capitol that violently transgressed norms and traditions.

Trump's former chief of staff Mark Meadows fails to show for Jan. 6 committee deposition, prompting calls to hold him in contempt

    excerpt:

"Responding to the lawyers' statement from Thursday, a White House official said they would leave it up to the courts to resolve the dispute.

"Mr. Terwilliger is wrong on both the facts and the law. Mark Meadows hardly has claim to complain about norms and traditions – Meadows participated in an effort to subvert the Constitution and overturn a presidential election, including by pressuring state elections officials to alter election results and by personally attempting to coerce the Department of Justice into investigating absurd conspiracy theories. Furthermore, despite Terwilinger's claims, there are numerous recent examples of senior White House officials providing information and testimony to Congress," an official said in a statement."

What's next in Trump's scramble to stop the House from getting his White House docs - CNNPolitics

    excerpt:

    "Doesn't that eat up time?

Yes, which appears to be part of Trump's strategy.

In legal time, they're moving fairly quickly, but from the former President's perspective, every day without a document dump to Congress is a win.

Trump wants to draw out the process as long as humanly possible: have arguments in the appeals court, then at the Supreme Court if necessary.

He used the same techniques to keep the House from getting his tax records and other documents, and to prevent officials from testifying, and every step of the legal process can take weeks or months.

What happens if Trump loses at the appeals court?

With oral arguments on November 30, a ruling likely wouldn't come from the three-judge panel until early December.

The losing party then has a couple of options. It can ask the court to hear the appeal en banc -- that is, ask the full appeals court to review the case, rather than just the three judges. Should the court agree to the request, you'd see more filings, more debate and possibly oral arguments -- and more time off the clock. (The full court can also just say "no thanks" to the request.)

Or, after the three-judge panel rules, and assuming it doesn't go to the full court, the loser can go to the Supreme Court.

There, we'd likely go through the same procedure, but through the court's "shadow docket," where the justices often -- but don't always -- move quickly.

These maps show how Republicans are blatantly rigging elections

    excerpt:

"It’s the foundational concept of US democracy: voters choose the politicians they want to represent them.

Yet the reality in 2021 is much more depressing. As politicians undertake the once-a-decade process of redrawing political districts across the country, they are essentially rigging the system by deciding among themselves exactly which voters in which areas they want to represent. It’s a process called gerrymandering that allows them to virtually choose their voters and guarantee their re-election.

The United States stands almost alone in allowing partisan politicians to draw political districts in this way. It’s an invisible scalpel that profoundly affects US politics but also the tenor and character of the national discourse.

Republicans have control of the process in many states this year. And so far, they’re maximizing their advantage wherever they can. The new lines will likely help Republicans retake control of the US House next year."

These maps show how Republicans are blatantly rigging elections

    excerpt:

"Stephen K. Bannon, one of former President Donald J. Trump’s top aides early in his presidency, was indicted by a federal grand jury on Friday on two counts of contempt of Congress, the Justice Department said.

Mr. Bannon, 67, had refused last month to comply with subpoenas for information issued by the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. The House voted last month to hold Mr. Bannon in criminal contempt of Congress after he refused to testify or provide documents sought by the committee, a position taken by a number of former aides to Mr. Trump.

Mr. Trump had directed his former aides and advisers to invoke immunity and refrain from turning over documents that might be protected under executive privilege.

The House action referred the matter to the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington, D.C., for a decision on whether to prosecute him, leaving the politically and legally complex matter in the hands of the Justice Department."

Bannon eyed as key link between White House, Jan. 6 riot

    excerpt:

"“Based on the committee’s investigation, it appears that Mr. Bannon had substantial advance knowledge of the plans for January 6th and likely had an important role in formulating those plans,” Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), the pane’s vice chair, said at the committee meeting.

“Mr. Bannon was in the war room at the Willard on Jan. 6th. He also appears to have detailed knowledge regarding the president’s efforts to sell millions of Americans the fraud that the election was stolen,” she said.

The full House will vote on the matter Thursday, kicking to the Justice Department the decision of whether to file charges against Bannon, something that could mean a fine, jail time or both for the onetime White House employee.

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), the chair of the special panel, on Tuesday questioned why Bannon would be a “martyr” for Trump, who fired him after just a few months at the White House but ultimately pardoned the former aide on his last day in office as Bannon faced charges related to fundraising for Trump’s border wall."

Bannon eyed as key link between White House, Jan. 6 riot

    excerpt:

"Their rocky relationship appears to have rebounded ahead of Jan. 6 as Bannon met with rally organizers and promoted the event on his podcast.

“It’s not going to happen like you think it’s going to happen. ... All I can say is strap in. ... You made this happen and tomorrow it’s game day, so strap in,” Bannon told listeners.

“His testimony is important because he was predicting that all hell was going to break loose on Jan. 6 and he was reportedly in communication with the president in proximity to the 6th, in multiple communications with the White House leading up to that day,” House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), one of nine members on the Jan. 6 committee, told reporters.

“The biggest, I think, unknowns about Jan. 6 go to the president's role before, during and after, and we're determined to find out.”"

New London Man Arrested in Connection With Jan. 6 Capitol Riots

    excerpt:

"Another person from Connecticut has been charged in connection with the breach at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, NBC Connecticut Investigates has learned.

The US Attorney's Office confirmed that Jeremy Baouche, 24, appeared in federal district court in New Haven Wednesday.

According to court documents, Baouche lives in New London, Connecticut and works for General Dynamics Electric Boat, which is a Department of Defense contractor. Baouche has secret security clearances as part of his job, authorities noted.

Baouche faces charges out of the Washington DC federal district court connected to disruptive conduct inside a restricted Capitol building."

Article from August 2017 when Trump fired Bannon.

Steve Bannon’s exit from the Trump White House, explained

    xexcerpt:

"Then Bannon poured gasoline on the fire by giving a shockingly candid interview to liberal journalist Robert Kuttner Tuesday, in which he criticized some of his rivals in the administration by name, contradicted Trump’s stated North Korea policy, and explained his plans to reshuffle State Department personnel.

This provided his many internal enemies — who had already accused him of being too eager to leak and to take internal disputes to the press — with several more reasons to call for his head. (Bannon’s allies have put out the word that he wasn’t aware his remarks would be reported, which seems rather sloppy of him.) Now, Bannon is claiming that his departure was his own idea, and that he submitted his resignation two weeks ago — but several reporters are hearing that he was in fact fired."
