Steve Bannon’s exit from the Trump White House, explained

    excerpt:

"In any case, Bannon’s exit marks a major milestone for an administration and indeed a party that he’s influenced in profound ways. Bannon has attempted to steer Trump administration policy, and the GOP generally, toward what he dubs nationalism.

Part of this strategy involved stoking white voters’ resentments of various “others” — immigrants, Muslims, Black Lives Matter protesters — beyond what was previously considered acceptable by GOP elites. President Trump shares Bannon’s instincts, and so this resentment stoking has suffused much of Trump’s campaign and presidency (as we saw in the president’s statements on the violence in Charlottesville).

Much of this will surely continue despite Bannon’s departure. But in losing Bannon, Trump is losing an adviser who was deeply committed to implementing this agenda at a granular level — someone who cared about policy details and lower-level personnel appointments, rather than just presidential tweets or statements.

Furthermore, Bannon has said he wants to turn the GOP toward economic nationalism — which he defines as tougher trade policies, increased infrastructure spending, and perhaps even tax hikes on the wealthy — as well. But he’s been much less successful on that front, as other advisers and interests have argued in favor of Republican status quo policies on economic issues, and have mainly won out in the Trump administration so far."

In spite of the previous internal turmoil in Trump's administration stemming from Bannon, Trump brought him back into his administration unofficially after losing the 2020 election and used him to implement the insurrection at the Capitol (the type of turmoil Trump wanted in his last weeks of desperation). Just before leaving office, Trump pardoned Bannon for the criminal charge of fraud related to the 'We Build The Wall' fundraising scheme.

    and a $100k fine. I think it’s a pretty weak punishment.

Exclusive audio: Trump defends threats to "hang" Pence

    excerpt:

    Jonathan Karl: "
Were you worried about him during that siege? Were you worried about his safety?"

    • Trump: "No, I thought he was well-protected, and I had heard that he was in good shape. No. Because I had heard he was in very good shape. But, but, no, I think — "
Karl: "Because you heard those chants — that was terrible. I mean — "

    • Trump: "He could have — well, the people were very angry."
Karl: "They were saying 'hang Mike Pence.'"

    • Trump: "Because it's common sense, Jon. It's common sense that you're supposed to protect. How can you — if you know a vote is fraudulent, right? — how can you pass on a fraudulent vote to Congress? How can you do that? And I'm telling you: 50/50, it's right down the middle for the top constitutional scholars when I speak to them. Anybody I spoke to — almost all of them at least pretty much agree, and some very much agree with me — because he's passing on a vote that he knows is fraudulent. How can you pass a vote that you know is fraudulent? Now, when I spoke to him, I really talked about all of the fraudulent things that happened during the election. I didn't talk about the main point, which is the legislatures did not approve — five states. The legislatures did not approve all of those changes that made the difference between a very easy win for me in the states, or a loss that was very close, because the losses were all very close."

If found guilty the Judge would have no choice other than to sentence him to a minimum of 1 month for each charge (or two months in prison) or a maximum of 1 year (or 2 years in prison)

Trump ordered his national guard to go easy on his protestors (rioters) on the day before the event. Then during his speech, he told his rioters they will not take back their government by being weak. He told them to be tough and walk down to the capitol ... and he would walk with them ... which turned out to be a false promise.

Remember that half of Trump's national security group did not have national security clearance. It looks like they were there just to get rich by selling favors to their friends.

Donald Trump wanted National Guard to protect Capitol rioters, former defence secretary says

    excerpt:

"Former US president Donald Trump wanted National Guard troops in Washington DC to protect his supporters at the January 6 rally that ended with them attacking the US Capitol, leaving five dead, his former Pentagon chief testified on Wednesday.

Former acting defence secretary Christopher Miller told a House of Representatives panel that he spoke with Mr Trump three days before the former president's fiery speech that preceded the violence and led to his second impeachment.

According to Mr Miller's testimony, Mr Trump asked whether the District of Columbia's mayor had requested National Guard troops for January 6, the day Congress was to ratify Joe Biden's presidential election victory.

The former defence secretary testified that Mr Trump told him to "fill" the request and "do whatever is necessary to protect demonstrators that were executing their constitutionally protected rights"."

Republicans will now be arguing the merits of circumstances when a person can ignore a congressional subpoena if they so choose, refusing to recognize the danger to (what we think of) as 'democracy' if they succeed.

Said another way, can you imagine the uproar from GOP lawmakers and voters if a Democrat were to fail to respond to a subpoena?

A person can attend the hearing and argue as to its merits...... but simply choosing to not answer or attend could lead to repercussions that rip apart the very fabric of our country.

Christie’s calculus: Trump is ‘in the rearview mirror’

    excerpt:

"Yet Christie didn’t just swipe at the former president’s baseless claims of a stolen election. He also obliquely referenced the massive debt that grew on Trump’s watch and nodded to Trump’s praise for China’s dictator during his presidency.

“Any president, particularly a Republican one, should never be throwing bouquets at a murdering communist dictator in China,” Christie said, referring to Xi Jinping. “We should never be telling that person they’re doing something well.”"

Trump went far more fringe than that. He talked for a couple minutes at one of his rallies about how fell in love with the dictator of N. Korea,

Most of Trump's fans at the rally went quiet on that one.

Trump recently justified the assault on Mike Pence at the Capitol by saying that (in his perception) the election was stolen from him, which justified the violence of his protesters, and that Pence had enough secret service to protect him from the rioters.

The day of the Capitol riot, Trump made a public statement justifying the entire riot by saying that this is what happens when (in his mind) an election is stolen from him.

Trump thinks that (the Trump-pardoned) Bannon and others are justified in not complying with a subpoena because the January 6 investigation of the violence is just a political ploy.
