Palmer, who pleaded guilty on Oct. 4, would be the first assailant sentenced for participating in the Lower West Tunnel violence, where police battled rioters for more than two hours and some of the most harrowing scenes of violence occurred. The clash there included the beating and tasing of Washington Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone and the crushing of Metropolitan Police Officer Daniel Hodges in a Capitol doorway. Both episodes have become part of iconic and disturbing images of that day.

The Justice Department called for a 63-month sentence for Palmer, which prosecutors noted was on the lower end of the recommended range based on the details of his crime. The primary reason for that decision was that Palmer was one of the few felony defendants to plead guilty early and cooperate with law enforcement."

Five people died and dozens more were injured in the melee, which involved scores of Donald Trump supporters who chanted "stop the steal" as they stormed the Capitol to stop Congress from certifying the presidential election results declaring Joe Biden the winner."

Cohen was sentenced to prison.

Cohen, in particular. He has done lengthy interviews describing how Trump was a crook while working for him for a decade. Cohen defended Trump initially by lying to investigators, which earned him a prison sentence.

It raises the question as to why such people are even bothering to hang out with someone as toxic as Trump while fully knowing the sliminess of him.

 

GOP infighting in NC is expected to increase. Trump is adding to the chaos.

A court ruling extended the 2022 GOP primary by ten weeks into May. It gives even more time for GOP candidates to fight with each other.

Trump wants Walker out of the NC U.S. Senate race so that he can promote his favorite, Budd, but Walker hasn't dropped out.

"If you're a party official, you never want to see your own side fighting. You want to see the other side in disarray."

Michael Bitzer, a Catwaba College politics professor who analyzes voting trends, said the extra two months in the primary cycle will not have a substantial effect on the number of primary voters who turn out, but could negatively affect candidates who are poor campaigners.

He believes Republican primary voters fall into two camps: Trump loyalists and conservatives who don't align themselves with the former president. Bitzer thinks staunch Trump supporters presently represent a greater share of the primary electorate. Regardless of who wins, though, he believes, voters are likely to rally around the eventual nominee expected to face either former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley or state Sen. Jeff Jackson, the two leading Democrats.

“What Democrats would love to see is a midterm election on Donald Trump, and if his candidate (Budd) is the nominee, that’s gonna make that connection so much more apparent," Bitzer said."

Trump Rioter Who Attacked Cops With Fire Extinguisher Should Serve 5 Years, Feds Say

"Robert Scott Palmer was arrested 12 days after he was identified in a March HuffPost story as the Capitol rioter who assaulted cops with a fire extinguisher as they tried to protect the Capitol on Jan. 6. He has been locked up since he pleaded guilty in October to assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers using a dangerous weapon, inflicting bodily injury.

Judge Tanya Chutkan will sentence Palmer, who committed his assault on officers while wearing a red “Florida for Trump” hat, on Dec. 17. In a sentencing memo Friday, federal prosecutors sought 63 months behind bars.

Palmer will be the first Capitol defendant to be sentenced for a felony assault in connection with the brutal attack on law enforcement on the west side of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Video showed him spraying embattled officers with the contents of a fire extinguisher and then chucking the empty canister at the police line."
