At the time, the tarp over the McCain was said to be due to construction that was being done and not related to Trump's visit.

John McCain's Legacy Ship Was Covered With a Giant Tarp (!) to Avoid a Tantrum From Our Not-At-All Petty President

The Navy Covered a John McCain Ship With a Literal Tarp to Avoid a Tantrum From Our Petty President

    excerpt:

"Because moving a massive warship is easier said than done, the Navy instead kowtowed and covered the ship's name with a large gray tarp. A tarp! According to the Journal, sailors on the ship—who don uniforms bearing its insignia—were also given the day off."

Trump pushing back on special master's request for him to declare in court whether DOJ inventory is accurate | CNN Politics

    excerpt:

"Former President Donald Trump is pushing back against a plan from the special master overseeing the review of documents seized from Mar-a-Lago that would require Trump to declare in court whether the Justice Department’s inventory from the search is accurate.

The requested declaration would force the former President to go on the record in court about his suggestion that the FBI may have planted evidence during the search on August 8.

Trump’s objection to the request for the declaration was made public Wednesday night in a court filing from his lawyers, after the Justice Department discussed his opposition vaguely in a public submission to US District Judge Raymond Dearie, who is serving as special master, Tuesday evening.

Trump’s team argued the court order appointing Dearie made mention only of a declaration from a government official verifying the Justice Department’s search inventory, and that there was no such reference to a declaration from the Trump side. In the newly-public filing, which was a letter sent privately to Dearie Sunday, Trump said he had to object to the requirement “because the Special Master’s case management plan exceeds the grant of authority from the District Court on this issue.”"

    excerpt:

"“Additionally, the Plaintiff currently has no means of accessing the documents bearing classification markings, which would be necessary to complete any such certification by September 30, the currently proposed date of completion,” Trump said.

The former President’s team also claimed that Dearie is exceeding his authority by asking that the documents from the search be logged in categories more specific than what US District Judge Aileen Cannon, who granted Trump’s request for the review, contemplated in her appointment order.

Trump expressed his opposition as well to providing a briefing to Dearie on whether certain legal motions related to the search were best left to the magistrate judge who approved the warrant."

Ginni Thomnas said she would clear up misunderstandings when she speaks to the Jan. 6 committee.

Wife of Supreme Court justice meets with U.S. Capitol riot committee

    excerpt:

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Virginia "Ginni" Thomas, wife of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, met on Thursday with the congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Thomas was seen going into the meeting room in a House office building that is used by the House of Representatives Select Committee for its interviews. The panel's chairperson, Democratic Representative Bennie Thompson, had told reporters on Wednesday that Thomas would appear before the panel this week.

Thomas is active in conservative political circles and said she attended a rally held by former President Donald Trump before thousands of his supporters stormed the Capitol. Trump made a fiery speech at the rally repeating his unfounded allegations that his election defeat was due to widespread fraud and urged the crowd to march on Congress."

New details on the bizarre effort to hide the USS John S. McCain for Trump
Analysis by Aaron Blake, Staff writer
    September 29, 2022 at 1:07 p.m. EDT

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...-bizarre-effort-hide-uss-john-s-mccain-trump/

    excerpt:

"The emails, obtained by Bloomberg News reporter Jason Leopold and by the Wall Street Journal through Freedom of Information Act requests, fill out the story of military officials responding to a request from the White House Military Office. Among the discoveries:
    • They show military officials saying repeatedly that this was a White House request, but also that officials didn’t want to put it in writing.
    • At one point, a military official was apparently so taken aback by the request that the person asked that it be confirmed. “I could see that becoming a Tweet,” the official added.
    • Another military official responded the next morning by saying, “This just makes me sad.”
While there were calls for investigations at the time, including by then-acting defense secretary Patrick Shanahan and McCain’s successor in the Senate, Martha McSally (R-Ariz.), we’ve learned very little since then. And while it might not rank too high on the list of Trump-era controversies, it’s at the very least hugely emblematic of officials’ often-strange attempts to treat Trump with kid gloves, for fear of angering him."

This covering of McCain's name incident occurred in May 2019, about 9 months after McCain's death.

    excerpt:

"The same day, another official runs through the situation, saying, “This direction was passed to” someone in the White House Military Office, “who in turn provided this guidance to” the 7th Fleet. The email also cites a Davids email to LeClair — potentially the April 12 email above — “emphasizing the importance of making sure this happens.”

And for the first time, it references a Navy official who “took additional steps by hanging the … brow banner,” while emphasizing this was “NOT directed” by the 7th Fleet.

While the “brow banner” reference isn’t clear, the Wall Street Journal published a photo of what it called a “tarp” covering the ship’s name. The photo was taken the same day as the email — May 24."

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...-bizarre-effort-hide-uss-john-s-mccain-trump/

    excerpt:

"(The “weekend” reference appears to cite another detail reported by the Journal: That “sailors on the ship, who typically wear caps bearing its name, were given the day off during Mr. Trump’s visit.”)

Sawyer recommended “no further actions” and added that “this includes ‘undoing’ anything that has been done (brow banner, paint scaffolding).”

Further emails from May 25 feature military officials trying to account for those actions and again noting that other military officials resisted putting instructions in writing.

The tarp was taken down that day, the Navy confirmed. The Journal reported that a barge later blocked the name but was also moved.

After the controversy exploded, the Navy issued a statement noting that the name of the ship was not obscured during Trump’s visit — but without acknowledging that it had been previously, and deliberately so. Trump seized upon this, tweeting: “The Navy put out a disclaimer on the McCain story. Looks like the story was an exaggeration, or even Fake News — but why not, everything else is!”"

Trump Lawyer Boris Epshteyn Appears Before Atlanta Grand Jury

    excerpt:

"Boris Epshteyn, one of former President Donald J. Trump’s most prominent lawyers, testified on Thursday before a special grand jury in Atlanta that has been convened as part of a criminal investigation into election interference by Mr. Trump and his allies.

Mr. Epshteyn played a central role in efforts to keep Mr. Trump in power despite his loss in the 2020 election. He now serves as an in-house counsel for the former president, helping coordinate the Trump team’s various legal defense efforts; a separate federal investigation into Mr. Trump’s mishandling of classified documents is underway, along with the inquiry by the Congressional committee investigating the attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters on Jan. 6, 2021.

The grand jury appearance was the latest legal complication for Mr. Epshteyn — one of a number of Trump lawyers who have themselves faced an onslaught of criminal and civil exposure. Earlier this month, federal investigators seized Mr. Epshteyn’s cellphone as part of yet another federal investigation, this one into the attempts to overturn the election results and the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol.

His lawyer did not return calls for comment."

A ruling by Cannon says that Trump doesn't have to submit a sworn statement related to his claim that the FBI may have planted evidence at Mar-a-Lago.

    https://www.usnews.com/news/top-new...st-to-accuracy-of-fbis-list-of-seized-records

    excerpt:

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) -A federal judge on Thursday ruled that former President Donald Trump does not have to provide the court with a sworn statement attesting to whether he believes the list of items seized by the FBI from his Florida estate is accurate and complete.

The order from U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon came after U.S. Senior Judge Raymond Dearie, appointed as special master at Trump's request to oversee a review of the records seized from Mar-a-lago, had ordered Trump's lawyers to let him know if they disputed the accuracy of the government's property inventory list.

Trump has claimed, without evidence, that the FBI may have planted evidence when it searched Mar-a-lago on Aug. 8.

Late on Wednesday, Trump's lawyers lodged a complaint with the court about Dearie's demand, saying it exceeded the scope of Dearie's authority.

"There shall be no separate requirement on [Trump] at this stage, prior to the review of any of the seized materials, to lodge ex ante final objections to the accuracy of [the government's] inventory, its descriptions, or its contents," Cannon wrote in her order."

Judge Cannon also extended the deadline for disputes about privileged documents by about three weeks to Dec. 16, 2022.
