Disclosure of Trump's tax returns indicate that he did well on investments that were made for him earlier in life by his father that he cashed in during recent years, which show up as taxable gains, but that he has done poorly on investments that he has made, which he has used to make tax deductions.

If Trump somehow managed to convince the IRS not audit him the first few years in office, it worked against him by giving Congress leverage for obtaining his returns.

It's not known why the IRS didn't audit him until after Congress raised the issue.

His decision to not release them voluntarily and his decision to not divest when he became president worked against him.

In January 2017, Trump had stacks of papers on a table that supposedly were documents he signed turning over control of his businesses to his two sons.

Journalists were not allowed to look at the papers.
