Trump's White House aides were coaching him to say that he lost the 2020 election, as seen on a video they were making to air the day after the riot. It was made public by the January 6 committee in the House. Trump couldn't bring himself to say that he lost the election. He was upset and telling his aides that he couldn't say it. Trump continues to try to prove to Jack Smith that he didn't incite a riot on Jan. 6 by making veiled threats that his followers will riot as a result of what he calls the monster Jack Smith. https://www.salon.com/2023/07/24/will-only-backfire-on-him--they-prove-jack-smiths-entire-case/
That's the Trump who Kid Rock says he so proudly embraces because he boldly and clearly tells it like it is.
Kerik, a Giuliani associate whom Trump pardoned, turns over trove of documents to Jack Smith team. Rudy Giuliani ally, pardoned by Trump, gives trove of papers to special counsel
It's possible Trump won't be indicted in an anticipated second indictment by Smith. But the way Trump has become frantic again like he was before the previous two indictments, it sounds like he expects to be indicted soon. Trump in late night outburst as Jack Smith Jan 6 indictment looms – live
Trump is frantic again. Time to queue the Dragnet Theme again for a third indictment. YouTube video: Dragnet Theme
It doesn't appear that Smith will be stopping any time soon, but rather forging ahead with the investigation. Trump's first indictment by Smith didn't mean another wasn't coming. A second indictment by Smith doesn't mean more aren't coming.
55% isn't that large a number. A majority of Americans think Trump should drop out of 2024 race if he’s indicted a third time

Sure, he will. The same thing was bound to have happened had he lost in '16. As he said on 10/20/16: "I would like to promise and pledge to all of my voters and supporters, and to all of the people of the United States, that I will totally accept the results of this great and historic presidential election ........if I win." Does anyone honestly believe he would have gone quietly had he lost that first election?
If he lost in ‘16 the only thing he would have had was “it was rigged”. He wouldn’t have had all the resources and people (who had some form of credibility until now) to help push the narrative and do all the dirty behind the scenes work to discredit and disrupt a fare and free election. Once he got into office, he had way too much influence on the people who were just as dirty, corrupt, malicious, and as corrosive as he was.
Trump's niece thought he wouldn't run again in 2024 over fear of another humiliating loss. Trump took care of that problem by fantasizing that elections are stolen from him. In his mind, he never loses. Being a psychologist, Mary should have anticipated Trump using such a ploy. He had already done it in 2016 when he said his 3 million popular vote loss to Hillary was due to fraudulent votes for her. Trump won't run for president in 2024 because he's too scared to 'lose like this again,' his niece Mary says
Mary also underestimated Trump's intense desires to retaliate against people he perceives wronged him., such as an election loss that he perceives to have been a win.
Trump's psychological defense mechanisms related to losing an election are an interesting phenomenon. They highlights both Trump's deranged ploys to protect himself from humiliation and his intense desire to avenge other people or groups who he thinks wronged him, even when they didn't. It's two pathologies in one nutshell.
This is a problem for Jack Smith and others who are prosecuting Trump. They want to show intent that Trump realized that he had lost the election but forged ahead anyway with false claims. But his layers of psychological defense mechanisms are thick and hide what underneath may have been a realization in his own mind that he really did lose the 2020 election. Such a case could go into a protracted battle between psychologists on both sides arguing what they think Trump's state of mind was during the two months leading up to the riot at the Capitol.
Trump and the GOP haven't shown an ability to grapple with the changing demographics and the abortion issue in the context of the 2024 election. In the spirit of Ron DeSantis, Trump made statements this week that he will smoke out the communists and Marxists in colleges and universities. That's his way of trying to win the young vote in 2024. It might receive applause at a rally by Turning Point USA, but it doesn't seem like a good way to appeal to the rest of the electorate. Trump and the GOP still haven't accepted the reality of the changing demographics in the U.S. Their response has been to hark back to 1950's style rhetoric about communists and to use state legislatures to selectively disenfranchise the Democratic vote. They are forced to grapple with the abortion issue now that that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe. v. Wade. Trump has made sketchy statements that he thinks everyone will be happy in the end with legislation enacted by the states. Regarding federal legislation, Trump deferred the matter to McCarthy by saying he thinks McCarthy will produce fair abortion legislation and that he will sign it if he is reelected president. Seemingly to keep pace with DeSantis on hot-button issues, Trump has recently said that he favors federal restrictions on abortions, a topic he had previously avoided when asked by journalists. It's not expected to yield Trump a net gain in the general electorate.
