"If we don't show up tomorrow, it is entirely possible that we will not have the opportunity to ever cast a ballot again," Winfrey said at Kamala Harris's final rally in Philadelphia.

That's just awful scaring people like that.

I just think the distress some people must have experienced when Trump won that night if they believed this.

I don’t know why people believe what people like her say. If they would study our government they would know the three branches offset each other so that a dictatorship is not possible which is what she is referring to. If a dictatorship was possible our foreign enemies would have overthrow us along time ago.these celebrities actually think the American people are stupid and look to them for guidance. Most of us look to Jesus for guidance. God bless American and pray for our new leaders to make the right decisions with Jesus help.

Yes and no, many dictatorships do have the three branches. Russia has them in theory. It is just that one man managed to maneuver around in order to get a grip on all of them, even if in theory independent.
If you have the executive power of the president, but also managed to create a tight control of loyalists in the party that is also pulling the legislative body, and also managed to position loyal judges ....

Reluctant to use tis reference because of the use of Hitler in this specific campaign, but yeah, Hitler came to power through elections, not a cue. A general running over a democratic government with military force is not the only way democracies descent into dictatorships. Just having separation in theory is not enough, that is not what history tells us, there needs to be a constant effort to actually keep them that way de facto, not just de iure.

There is no perfect foolproof way to set up a system in such a way to make a dictatorship impossible to maneuver in. It can only make it more or less difficult, require more or less work and manipulation and therefore give more time and options to stop it. It is easier to just roll over with tanks than to do what Putting has done - take hold of the intelligence apparatus > take hold of the repressive apparatus and the military > take hold of the media > consolidate and get full loyalist control off the party > take hold of the oligarchs and the economy = complete centralized control of the country regardless if keeping with the facade of formal division of power. Because everyone in every part of that formally divided system does ultimately answer to that single person in a fully centralized para-structure with a loyalty borne from a mix of interest and fear. Takes way more long term cunning and maneuvering, but it is certainly possible.
Btw even further back that is how the roman republic had become and empire. Cesar was killed for it, but Octavian that was a bad military commander was also much more politically cunning and able to maneuver and consolidate power within the system long enough before there even was a formalized imperial system, while keeping the pro forma "democratic" institutions alive and pretending to be a "humble servant" while de facto consolidating the grip until it was too late (compared to Cesar that just directly declared himself dictator for life).

I am not saying there is anything like that in the US at all now, but just that having formally separated powers in the states is not a guarantee, it is not a magic spell.

Was not an opinion, she took one million dollars !

That payment included a $1 million payment to Harpo Productions for the “United for America” town hall, which was live-streamed on Sept. 19 and hosted by Winfrey, 70.

Anyone who thinks the Republicans would allow ANYBODY to become ANY kind of dictator clearly has no understand of the Republican mindset.

The republicans elected a felon, sexual predator (rapist), liar, bigot, egomaniac, and a rambling incoherent violent man.
Why do you believe they are thinking rationally?

Obviously it wasn't just Republicans who voted in the mandate for getting our shit together. Independents and success minded Democrats joined the fray. The fact that anyone voted the other way is still concerning, but at least it wasn't enough to bring us down. Conscientious people didn't vote for one person, but a team. The problem solvers coming in show a lot of promise, God help them do a good job for everybody, rising the tide for all boats.

Just because trump tried to overthrow the government and the republicans are so scared he'll come up with a nick name for them so they kiss his fat lying ass---no reason to hold that against him. He's a wonderful fellow.

    No, read my post again.
I said, "The republicans elected a felon, sexual predator (rapist), liar, bigot, egomaniac, and a rambling incoherent violent man."
There are many politicians who are not a felon, sexual predator (rapist), liar, bigot, egomaniac, and a rambling incoherent violent men or women.

In 248 years we have never elected a convicted felon to the office of president, nor a convicted rapist.

Yes your side voted for those who want to overthrow the government and Trump is now in the process of enlisting a "team" bent on the destruction of the federal government on a massive scale.
As his Supreme Court has granted him complete immunity from any crime he commits while in office (the King can do no wrong), and he will take over the DOJ by appointing one of his clowns with the support of fellow Republicans or as a recess appointee, and as Congress is now packed with boot lickers, sexual predators, and scoff laws; he will get piles of shit together.

Hope you like to eat shit.

    That'll never change.

"complete immunity" - that sounds like drugs talking.

Yeah yeah, the woman who used sexual favors to establish her government career has the moral high ground on the womanizer? I mean...

I like to eat eggs and bacon. I like to go for drives and rides. That's not something I should have to take out a high interest loan to be able to do.

It's not about overthrowing the govt, it's about reforming the govt machine which has govt working for the interests of large corporations instead of the people.

They are mostly corrupt--that is most of them on all sides. It's ever been thus.
