Live updates: Trump to roll out new tariffs that he promises will free the US from foreign goods

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 was down 1.3% following one of its worst losses of the past couple of years Friday. It’s on track to finish the first three months of the year with a loss of 6.4%, which would make this its worst quarter in nearly three years.

    excerpt:

“I don’t think it’s in anybody’s interest in Canada to get Zelenskyy-ed. They’ve shown that they lack the class to treat an ally whose people are dying with any respect. I imagine that we’d be risking that as well,” Volpe told POLITICO.

Volpe said Canada needs to be patient and let the economic harm that will unfold in the U.S. take hold.

“What if we go to the other side and everything shuts down, and 950,000 U.S. auto workers are sitting around? That’s ugly, but that’s also hopeful,” Volpe said. “That’s a whole group that people are going to have to hear from, and they’re not going to talk about the price of eggs. They’re going to talk about how to make rent.”

    excerpt:

"Earlier this week, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney drew a line in the sand about relations with America. “The old relationship we had with the United States, based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation, is over,” he said during a speech on Parliament Hill.

The same could be said for many Canadian property owners who have—or used to have—second homes and winter escapes in the United States. Anger over the Trump administration’s continued references to the country as the “51st state” and the prime minister as a governor, in addition to the tariffs that have set off a trade war between allies, have led to the beginning of a property sell-off."

Musk, as an unelected official in a fictitious government department, has fired about 24,000 of the most vulnerable federal workers without justification and directed others, whom he has accused of not showing up for work, back to brick-and-mortar facilities, some of which have turned out to be storage rooms with no lighting, bathrooms, running water, windows, or heating and cooling.

He's now appalled by the adverse reactions of the public to his supposed innocence.

Federal workers Musk fired were peaceful and doing their work. They did nothing wrong but were on the receiving end of Musk's wrath.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/31/world/trump-foreign-policy-trust.html

    excerpt:

"The F-35, a fifth-generation fighter, was developed in partnership with eight countries, making it a model of international cooperation. When President Trump introduced its successor, the F-47, he praised its strengths — and said the version sold to allies would be deliberately downgraded.

That made sense, Mr. Trump said last week, “because someday, maybe they’re not our allies.”

For many countries wedded to the United States, his remark confirmed a related conclusion: that America can no longer be trusted. Even nations not yet directly affected can see where things are heading, as Mr. Trump threatens allies’ economies, their defense partnerships and even their sovereignty."

    https://www.politico.com/news/2025/03/31/trump-institutions-grovel-law-media-business-028840

    excerpt:

In the eyes of critics, Trump has for a lifetime caressed his grievances as if he were supervillain Ernst Stavro Blofeld stroking his cat. “What you see here is a group of people who think they missed an opportunity the first time around — that they didn’t fully realize what they now believe to be the powers of the presidency and they didn’t maximize Trump’s indiscriminate, narcissistic, vengeful nature,” said Ty Cobb, a former White House lawyer during the first Trump administration. “They’re playing to Trump’s strengths, which is as a mob boss.”

    The Great Grovel era.

    https://www.politico.com/news/2025/03/31/trump-institutions-grovel-law-media-business-028840

    excerpt:

"The details are varied but two themes are consistent. The first is an effort — far more organized and disciplined than any precedent from Trump’s first term — to bring institutions who have earned the president’s ire to heel. The second theme is even more surprising: The swiftness with which supposedly powerful and supposedly independent institutions have responded — with something akin to the trembling acquiescence of a child surrendering his lunch money to a big kid on the morning walk to school.

Cumulatively, the cases represent an astonishing new chapter in the history of the American establishment: The Great Grovel."

Trump says he's upset with Putin.

Trump says he's 'very angry' and 'pissed off' at Putin during an NBC News interview

    excerpt:

“If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia’s fault — which it might not be — but if I think it was Russia’s fault, I am going to put secondary tariffs on oil, on all oil coming out of Russia,” Trump said in an early-morning phone call with NBC News on Sunday.

“That would be that if you buy oil from Russia, you can’t do business in the United States,” Trump said. “There will be a 25% tariff on all oil, a 25- to 50-point tariff on all oil.”

Trump talks like his import tariffs are money coming from other countries to the U.S., yet he's now preparing for massive bailouts for the U.S. farmers as a result of his tariffs.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/31/us/politics/farmers-bailouts-trump-tariffs.html

    excerpt:

"Ahead of President Trump’s plan to impose sweeping tariffs across the globe this week, his administration is weighing a new round of emergency aid to farmers, who are likely to be caught in the middle if America’s trading partners retaliate.

The early discussions offer a tacit acknowledgment that Mr. Trump’s expansive tariffs could unleash financial devastation throughout the U.S. agricultural industry, a crucial voting base that the president similarly tried to safeguard during his 2018 trade war with China."

$6 trillion in tax hikes on working class people to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy that the GOP in Congress is currently trying to write and pass.

Trump's left-behinders and down-and-outers will still think he's doing what's in their interest.

What's gonna happen with Trump and Putin?

Is Putin just playing Trump for more time?

Or are they both acting to give Russia more land?
