I haven't got the cite yet. It was something I was reading online, along with short pieces written on the subject on Youtube. But some people say, and this is what I've heard, we can have a perfectly happy sociey without morality. I am not a philosopher or a politician. But a couple of things confuse me about that. For one thing, they seem to be rejecting the idea of moral objectivism. And FWIW that is where I often heard that said, by people who reject the idea of the human morals are objectively true and can be known as fact. But they also assume that happiness is the goal of human society. I think everyone would agree human welfare and happiness are the only goal of human society. Along with the mercy, charity and kindness that lead to that. But how could we have a society without morals then? Isn't the person who says assuming that something is objectively true about ethics, namely what I just said. Happiness, like in hedonism and utilitarianism, and the mercy and kindness that leads to it to be enjoyed equally by all? I know 30 years now I have believed, and for the 25 years I have been online, as I have told people that I think human evil is just a disease. And it should be treated that way. Treated with the goal of helping not punishing. I also recently found this quote online I have been sharing by Mahatma Gandhi. Now he was religious and traditional, but a social reformer of course. A person who always considered himself a Hindu. Which is why I like quoting him. Someone who I wouldn't agree with on the religious and traditional part, but do agree with in this statement: "All criminals should be treated as patients and the jails should be hospitals admitting this class of patients for treatment and cure. No one commits crime for the fun of it. It is a sign of a diseased mind."
Nah.........you cant have a society without a surten "morality"........but who decideds what "morality" beholds? (humannature/religion/goverment/ect))............place/time/situation you are born in, on this planet Personally i think humannature(survival)..............there always will be people who try to cut corners..............and what people think is "normal"(society you live or a born in)) *sigh* Mzzls
You can't have a society without some kind of morality, good or bad. Morality is the set of beliefs in a society. Without a set of beliefs, there is no society.
Morality is for those who can't afford justice. Just ask Gensis Khan. The Confucians preached morality for eons but, once they got into power, they quickly became decadent. Sadly, the more reliable people are, the more money they attract, and the more decadent they become, which how you get people like Adolf Hitler. Morality becomes just another toy for politicians to use against people. For example, Meta's "Like" button was almost exclusively used by people to express moral outrage. Morality without epistemology is a flock of angry chickens.
Thank you Echtwelniet, MeAgain and wooleeheron for your replies. Also I was going to add, as long as I am talking about the subject. I once read the reason why some people are more prone to violence is that they have stronger emotional states. I was just watching a video on Youtube now of a woman who reacted with uncontrollable emotion to her 20 year prison sentence that made me this of this. Maybe that was her original problem, you never know. Because there are solutions to that problem. Aside from accepting the problem which is the first step to solving anything, you can get therapy. And there are medicines. Many drug therapies, some that suppress underlying problems like panic and strong emotional states. I just did a search. And selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants, mood stabilizers, lithium, anticonvulsants, certain antipsychotics, benzodiazepines and beta-blockers all do this. Their main drawbacks being the side effects of emotional blunting and the other side effects associated with those drugs. But it's something for those people to consider. Prevention before punishment, as I often tell people.
Every prisoner on death row has brain damage, and you can rank our politicians according to how corrupt they are by their brain damage alone. The sad secret about morality, is those who claim to be moral, censor half the truth. They've been doing this since the invention of agriculture, but modern technology and 8 billion people are making it impossible. My work automates the truth, so the assholes can throw their newest AI out the window.
Emotions are generally regarded in the mind of the Buddhist as aspects of our personality that interfere with the development of a spiritual life, as unwholesome states ethically undesirable, and roadblocks to be cleared in the battleground between reason and emotion. In keeping with this perspective emotions are described as states of "agitation" or "imbalance."[1]
Dozens of species of animals have proven to have a sense of humor, and humor is all about learning what to ignore and avoid. You cannot have thoughts without emotions, because they emerge from our subconscious mind. The issue is the harmony in the system, not what is good and evil.
