Democrats Notch Major Redistricting Wins in Virginia and California, Likely Opening the Door to Nine-Seat Gain in House
Virginia Democrats advanced their own redistricting changes shortly after a federal court allowed California’s new map to be used.

Democrats Notch Major Redistricting Wins in Virginia and California, Likely Opening the Door to Nine-Seat Gain in House

    excerpt:

"On the other side of the country, California Democrats also won a major battle after a federal court ruled that their new congressional maps — approved by voters in November — could be used this year. Under Supreme Court precedent, the judges on Wednesday held that partisan gerrymandering was perfectly permissible."

Democrats are poised to add nine seats in the House because of redistricting efforts in CA and VA.

It's a defensive response to Trump initiatiating his gerrymandering campaign in red states to avoid losing control of the House in the 2026 midterm election.

An extra nine seats for Democrats would offset most of the gains Trump has achieved.

Palestinian activist Khalil faces the prospect of being detained and deported.

Appeals panel says lower court didn't have authority to order release of Mahmoud Khalil

    excerpt:

"The decision is a victory for the Trump administration in its push to detain and remove pro-Palestinian activists in the U.S. on student visas. The judges ordered the district court to vacate Khalil's habeas corpus petition, raising the prospect that he could be detained again as his immigration case proceeds."

When They're Not Applying Banned Chokeholds, ICE Agents Are Apparently Stealing and Selling Citizens' Phones

    excerpt:

As if it needs to be said, this isn’t law enforcement–this is the kind of behavior that law enforcement is intended to dissuade and prevent. The immigration agents in this account are effectively operating as something like federally sanctioned highwaymen–they might as well be privateers in tactical vests and masks, flying the U.S. flag as a defense for why they’re able to do literally anything they want, right up to stealing from citizens for personal profit, confident that nothing will happen to them. If this was the Old West, this is the type of scenario where the citizens would be expected to find a U.S. Marshal and round up a posse in order to exact justice. Only today, it’s the federal “lawmen” who are doing the robbery, backed by millions of dollars in federal PR and spin to convince half of the U.S. population that you clearly deserved anything that was done to you. Oh, an ICE agent stole your phone and sold it? Well, turns out that as of this moment, that’s the new retroactive penalty for being “disrespectful” or “obstructive.”

When They're Not Applying Banned Chokeholds, ICE Agents Are Apparently Stealing and Selling Citizens' Phones

    excerpt:

"Just consider, for a moment, the thought process of the immigration agents making this kind of decision. You detain a man under the suspicion of being an illegal immigrant, and brutalize both him and his teenage son who is on his way to high school. You take the phone that the kid is using to record the experience–prior to when you start choking him, that is. One would expect there to be some kind of lip service here about how the phone was being taken for “evidence” or “investigation,” or in greater likelihood the thought that perhaps it can be wiped of any incriminating evidence. Nevertheless, if a federal agent takes your phone from you, do you not expect for them to hang onto it in some kind of official capacity? Maybe to even return your property to you afterward, if you’re really lucky? One thing I’m pretty certain isn’t in the operations manual: Bringing your phone to a kiosk, to sell for cash, and then pocketing the modest payday."

During a Fox interview this week, Trump once again called Canada a nasty trading partner and claimed it has tariffs on the U.S. as high as 400%, although he gave no details

The Fox interviewer reminded Trump that he signed the USMCA agreement with Canada. Trump responded by claiming Canada is cheating on USMCA.

After all the name-calling, Trump said he still likes Canada and wants it to be the beloved 51st state.

Trump threatens to invoke the Insurrection Act for use in Minneapolis.

Trump threatens to use the Insurrection Act to ‘put an end’ to protests in Minneapolis

    excerpt:

“If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don’t obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT, which many Presidents have done before me, and quickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place in that once great State,” Trump said in social media post.

    As expected.

María Corina Machado says she presented Trump with her Nobel peace prize medal

    excerpt:

The Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has said she “presented” her gold Nobel peace prize medal to Donald Trump after meeting him in the White House, nearly a fortnight after he ordered the abduction of Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro.

Machado, who received the award last year for her struggle against Maduro’s “brutal, authoritarian state”, told reporters she had done so “in recognition [of] his unique commitment [to] our freedom”. It was not immediately clear whether Trump had accepted the gift.

Earlier in the day the Nobel organizers posted on X: “A medal can change owners, but the title of a Nobel peace prize laureate cannot.”

Greenland minister tearful as she describes ‘intense pressure’ as Trump threatens to take territory

    excerpt:

Polish prime minister Donald Tusk said on Thursday that any attempt by a Nato member to take over another member would be “the end of the world as we know it”.

“An attempt to take over [part of] a Nato member state by another Nato member state would be a political disaster,” he told a press conference. “It would be the end of the world as we know it, which guaranteed a world based on Nato solidarity, which held back the evil forces associated with communist terror or other forms of aggression.”
