I'm looking for more practical, inside information on Asperger Syndrom or other syndroms from the Autism spectrum. I'm suspecting someone I know to be an Aspi but it's hard to diagnose since the DSMIV criteria are pretty broad and vague and all the checklists on the internet differ slightly or majorly from one another.

If you are an aspi or have any other autism related syndrom.. or you know someone who has, I'd love to hear about it!

    Thanks mucho ;)

I have a friend who has been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. You can never really notice it though. Sometimes he seems like he's a bit.. out there, but then again.. aren't we all.. hehe. :) And he has a really hard time to express his feelings, which might be because of the syndrome. But that's pretty much it. I guess this doesn't help you much.. Ohh well. :)

    Hey thanks!

It does help to hear that someone diagnosed with Asperger can be seen as quite normal.. since I think that no one at work really notices anything about him.. just we (his bro, mom and me) do and especially me (since I'm 'new' in the family and not used to someone being like that).. he's 33 and since I've known him for just about 3 years now I'm more looking for other Aspi adults than children.. I haven't discussed this with his mom and his brother (my bf) is 6 years younger than he is so he doesn't recall a great deal of his brothers youth.

Thanks a lot for responding.. I've found some great websites in the meantime.. this one is great: www.faaas.org and a very nice Dutch forum for autists.

There is a poster here with Ausp. I can't remember his name, he is quite eloquent and put a thread, I beleive, in Parenting a while ago. This site has a search engine, put Asperger's into the engine, and all posts with that word will come up.

Good luck, he was happy to talk to people about it, I hope you can locate him.

I am a certified behavioral thearapist through card for autism spectrum disorders. A lot of times aspergers is misdiagnosed for severe adhd. the overt symptoms mirror each other but what's going on neurologically is the complete oppositte of adhd.

I am an adult with asperger syndrom. Finally diagnosed in Dec 2001.

in 1971 I was diagnosed "hyperactive" and placed on Ritalin for many many years. Asperger was not recognized in the US untill 1994.

My cousin has Aspergers, but again he's a child so I guess that's not really what you're looking for...

I have been away for a while. Just say that posting on here was not one of my priorities. But I am back. I am the person that was mentioned. I posted on the parenting forum a while ago about this.

What do you want to know?

hey, velvet, i know a guy with aspergers, around 16 years old. He can be a bit of an extremist at times... Eek... no offence barefoot surefer dude. if this is any use, i'll describe him a bit
A few things i guess i ve noticed,, in comparing him to other people my age

major mood swings, but .. he's always either really excited and great mood or depressed. and the slightest thing can change it.
I find he takes alot of things very seriously, and literally, so figures of speech you use just confuse him.
also he offends people easily because he doesnt get unwritten rules, social etiquette type stuff. He doesnt know when to stop, where the boundaries are...and can be very explicit

more positive stuff, is that he is very intelligent and logical, good at maths and computing. very articulate and says he is a good conversationalist... ( is that a word?!)
i think alot of the time, he picks up ideas and ways of speaking from watching tv, like sitcoms and stuff.

mb some of this will register with you.

I worked with a kid over the summer who had that. If the emotional situation around him became too much (one time a fellow RA started yelling at some kids at his table), he would just freeze for as long as an hour. This particular time, he was there with a piece of pizza halfway in his mouth for 40 minutes. On the plus side, it was a Johns Hopkins program for gifted and talented students. They all had to take the SAT's in 7th or 8th grade and get above around 1200, I think, to get in.
