I have really long, straight hair and i always have a few braids in it here and there but i sorta get sick of rebraiding all the time. so i was wondering if it is at all possible to just have a few dreads here and there, like underneath, or would that not work? anyone tried this? not even sure why or where i came up with the idea...i guess im just not ready to do my whole head or something...
    thanks for any info.

Oh yeah of course you can,

Before I had dreads I had 2 at the back in which i used to tie my hair back :) they work, but they might gobble up some of the hair around it

You can do it but like electricbuddha said...they'll probably end up "gobbling" up hairs around it...lol. It'll be a pain in the ass to keep the dreads separate from the other hair and to keep the straight hair combed without interfering with the dreadies. Hmm...but you can always give it a try. You might end up loving your few dreads and do your whole head anyway...haha.

hey electricbuddha thats a good idea! just having some to tie up the rest of my hair (i hate elastics anyways)
well, i made one dread tonite..backcombed one underneath my hair, sort of behind my ear...surprised at how short it was. my hair is about 24 inches long and the dread is real short, just a bit past my shoulder now. but i like my phat little dread already =) do they thin out/lenghthen with time and rolling? (eh i know i could find this info in the forum but im lazy...)
    =)

id sujjest doing them on the surface not under the rest of the hair... less chance of gobbling going on :p i had one for 8 months before i did the rest of my head... it has a bead on it so i know which one it is :)

thats what im tyring to do... so far ive had them for about 2-3 weeks... i want to do more, but i dont have a good comb and someone to help me with them. for some reason, the people i have talked to, tell me to use wax, but i know i dont want to use wax, they say that waxed dreads look neater rather than my fluffy crazy dreads... i dont know, i need advice...
    peace and love

yeh its definetly possible esp if you have straight hair, i know lots of girls who have done that just dreading the undergrowth or dreading the back of the hair only.

mary jeanne - how many do you have?
I just have one that i did last nite and i really like it. Im going thru a very big, difficult personal transition right now so it means alot... im juust having trouble with the ends. like i roll them and they ends get thin and tiny bits of hair ball up and fall off..not sure what to do bout that

sometime ill post a pic of my one, lone dread...;)

also, is it a better idea to wait till dreads are more locked to put in beads?

Put in beads at any time you want.

DONT USE WAX!! if you want to know the reasons why we have LISTS of them in the sticky threads (the what to avoid thread is good to look at)

Cheshi dont worry about the ends. Ive had mine a year and the ends are still a bit straighjt and only now have some of them started to lock and go rounded. The reason hairs are falling out is because they are dead hairs, nd as at the moment they arent locked on to the rest of your dread they will fall out.

See your dreadlock LOOKS liek a dread lock however its not ACTUALLY locked... its a baby dread so its slowly over time going to lock and get tighter and harder. It will look loose and fluffy untill then. The best thing to do is stick a bead on it and forget its there :p With my dreads i was sheding hair more then i thought possible for about 2 months of first having dreads.

The bead will help hold the dread together and help it dread faster from what I have been told. And dont use wax! It took me a couple of months to get all the wax out, and that was after scolding hott showers and alot of ringing em out. Just let your dreads do what they want. Dont worry if they dont always look that great, the point of dreads is to lash out against society's standards. I love my knotts more and more everyday, though there are times where I wish I was a couple years into this.

Just remeber you will always have us to help you through any second guessin you are doin, we will always have positive reinforcement for you!

much love to you all! :)

i know a few people (girls) that have straight hair with dreads scattered here and there. usually one on either side of the head and another in the back somewhere. they´re usually half hidden in the rest of the hair, so it´s like they´re there, but also not there. [IMG]
