Has anyone else heard about the all-new lineup for the Trey Anestasio band? Apparently they debuted in Burlington, Vt on st patricks day and are about to start a spring tour. Anyone heard the burlington show? know anything about the new musicians? what songs are they going to do (covers, phish tunes, new songs, etc)? I'm tentatively excited aobut this project because I think trey is a great guitarist and I'm interested to see what he does outside of the boundries (such as they were) of phish. Then again, phish was at their best when Trey wasn't so dominating and was able to let page or mike take the lead at times, and communicated with everyone. Maybe this will just see Trey's ego expanding more than ever, who know? I'll probably have to hit one of the shows on this tour and find out.
I'm seeing them in Richmond on 4/26 with my dad... He's never been to a Phish concert before or a Trey concert. My uncle used to take me to see phish, but he died. He followed them.
Haha... yeah, the landmark is a real pain in the ass, but I don't need beer . I don't get why he's going there... it's only about 3,200 seats or something and almost all the others are selling out. I got shitty tickets, but, oh well. 2nd level row O. Hell, last year I bought two front row tickets to CSN for $99 and even got to meet David and Graham at Virginia Beach after talking to a roadie and I got a bunch of Stephen's picks.
Yeah, I've never been on the balcony... I saw my first concert at the landmark when I was about six months old. I just wish I could remember it.
oh i'm sooo excited to see trey this year. i'm going to bonnaroo and 10000 lakes, so those shows should be pretty great!
whats with all this ego talk. do any of you really know if he has an ego? or is this a case of spotting off the same old shit?
We all have an ego, harpua, just some of us have more control over them than others. I admit I don't know Trey on a personal level, but I think itsw clear if you compare a tape from around 94 to one of their most recent shows you can hear that the band isn't communicating as much as they used to, and are more and more often just providing a background groove to Trey's guitar solos. Don't get me wrong, I thought some of the recent shows were awesome. The first night at coney island may very well be the best show i've ever seen by any group. I'm just saying it started to seem that the fame and the coke were starting to take a toll on Trey's personality. I understand he checked into rehab immediately after the Coventry festival, so I can only assume he's cleaned himself up at least somewhat before starting this tour. I wish him the best of luck in getting clean, and pray that one day he'll bring phish back together after all the members have had some time alone to refresh themselves. p.s. I'm sure you'll notice upon reading my post again that I said maybe we'll his ego expanding more than ever, but who knows. I think I made it pretty clear that I'm only speculating.
Are you sure you want to use 1994 as an example for "democratic" jamming? 1994 was the epitomy of the "TREY led Phish", and everything sense then has been a build up to more band orientated, and less solo orientated, jamming....i don't know what you've been listening to though, because if anything, this last 2004 summer tour was more dominated by my man mike, who was leading the best jams...getting the most spotlight...with great extended solos.....i believe Vegas "3 of a kind" was where this really took off, with that phenomenol "boogie on"..........that is why i come to the conclusion alot of the times, that people want to seem above Phish, and talk this kind of unsupported, unprovable bullshit.....i know we all have ego's.....but, when some one speaks of EGO, they speak of an inflated one....and i think alot of music fans don't want to wrap their minds around phish, mostly because they can't, and so they put it down, and usually in the most uneducated way possible....spotting off rumors....sorry for the rant, but thats the way i see it....
I have connects on the inside and reports of personal meetings from a source I trust. Since figuing out sources is part of my job, I'd call this "good background." Trey does have an ego. he likes control. Nothing overly wrong with that, it is just hard for others to work with that. He was rude, no, cruel to my friend/ associate when they met in Amsterdamn during the "let's play Europe so the American wookies will go away" period. three members of Phish were loudly berating, in a public restaurant, a table of American tour heads. My associate was one. WTF? they didn't bother you, you are in public and one of them interviews you on a regular basis. as for "cannot wrap their minds around phish," c'mon. People don't like the band's stuff. So what? isn't that more room for you? I don't care for it. I saw a few shows, gave some more tapes a try. Sorry. not for me. It's not a great intellectual band. The guys are talented, extremely so, but this is not a thinkingman's jam band. Could have been.
so your friend ran into Trey on tour at a restaraunt, and he wasn't nice to her.....so who gives a fuck....how can you expeact this guy to be "peaches and cream" to every person that recognizes him...haven't you ever had a bad day....and being "cruel" has nothing to do with ego.....and i want to clarify i am not saying he is egoless by any means.....but none of you really know the extent of his ego....and neither do i....so i find the discussion of his "ego" trite and cliche'.......at best.
drumminmama...why even give credentials... this is internet message board speak, which allows for unquanitified "rumor..." Rumor has it that Phish stopped being good when Trey got all butt buddy like with Dave Matthews and they started busting out the Hunter S. Thompson lines of cocaine... Cokeheads are such pains in the ass...
I actually do know the extent of his ego me and harpua and most people who point out their dislike for it have a valid arguement. I've met Trey over the years on a number of occasions living here in Burlington. I'll cut in paste what I had replied to you in the thread about Trey in the music forum regarding the nature of the man -> Now I certainly respect your opinion, but mind you I've been seeing Phish since you were 6 years old and a good 70 times at that, the majority falling between 93 and 97. I live where they do, hang out with those who have been there since the very start working for the band, have met and talked to each member of the band on several occasion, see them all (with the exception of Trey) out on the town on a regular basis, so I think I have a pretty good grasp of what has happened with the band. Phish broke up because of Trey and Trey alone. He is essentially the Sting of the jamband scene. He wanted to break away from Phish so he could do his music and be in full control of what goes on on stage. This desire is what lead to the demise of the band and loss of magic on stage. The fact is that Phish became huge and with it had a large production company. Essentially, they needed to play to a certain number of people every year to support that company. The loss of magic and Trey's desire to do his own thing made this a hassle for him. So what did Trey decide was the best thing to do to avoid this hassle? He decided to break up the band and dissovle dinosian productions. The rest of the band had zero desire to do this. Within months of their break up, dinosian was disolved, many people lost their jobs and he signed on with the managers of Dave Mathews Band to promote his solo act. That is the truth me and harpua. Trey stopped caring about Phish and wanted to do his own thing. They were a magical group for fifteen years when he was into it. The last five were a complete struggle as he only wanted to do his own thing. If that isn't an ego, I don't know what is.
