Regardless of what brand or special formula of shampoo and conditioner I try, my scalp is BONE dry. Because of the dryness, it becomes very flaky, causing it to itch (which of course, produces more flakes). I wash it every other day to try and cut down on the dryness, yet going any longer causes the opposite reaction. Hot oil treatments leave my hair too oily, and dandruff shampoo gives me brittle, split ends. Regardless if I braid it while wet, or dry and straighten it (I don't use hair care products other than vitamin e capsules on the ends) it still ends up the same way. Does anyone have any advice?

I would say stay away from dandruff shampoo. Those only made mine worse. I found herbal essence's intensive blends worked really well. I think the one I use is the replinishing one.

try jojoba oil on the scalp (and ends if they need 'em.)
leave most of the shaft alone.
are the dry scalp serums available on OZ?

I Never Shampoo My Hair Or Comb It For That Matter. If You Get Into The Habbit Of Not Doing Anything To It, You Should Get Used To The Dandruff.

heat up some olive oil till its nice and warm- not hot- then using cotton balls massage it into your scalp. you can put a shower cap over it, so it doesnt mess up your house. leave it on as long as you can, or stand under your shower so the cap acts as a barrier for the heat. then shampoo and condition as usual. olive oil is a great moisturizer and it doesnt leave your hair too greasy after you've shampooed it out. good luck!

I hear that if you stop washing your hair period, it will get real oily, but will soon stabilize. It's because your skin needs to adjust. I haven't washed mine since August, it never got too oily, but that seems to be what's happening to you; you probably have very sensitive skin on your scalp, at least when it comes to chemicals/soap and oil glands. Anyways, since I stopped shampooing, my head rarely ever itches anymore, and I have no flakes.

There is several prescription products that would help. Two are: Dermasmooth FS or Dermazinc with clobetasol.

What about Henna??? That stuff works miracles for me. I usually use the neutral henna though so my hair doesn't change color, but it is a real miracle-worker. try it!

i agree with drumminmamma......jojoba oil is the best. as for the flakies, you could try mixing a bit of tea tree oil in with it and massaging it into your scalp...it is antibacterial, antifungal and it helps with the itching.

When I went to the dermatoligist for a rash he gave me this stuff-- I can't remember the name though, it started with an "L". It was in a green and pink bottle that looked just like a mousse container. I know it was for dry scalp conditions (although I was prescribed it for something else) I'm sure you could call a dermatologist and ask about it, give them the description, and ask them if it could possibly help... :)

lots of "dandruff" is actually built up hair product (I razzed my kid for a week before it occured to me he was gelling his hair) and badly rinsed shampoo.
a vinegar rinse (apple cider stinks less) can help eliminate that as a possibility.
I used hemp oil on my hair last week and WOW! what a difference. Again, I leave it on overnight and shower in the morning.

My head itches a lot and has flakes and my ends are starting to split. I think head and shoulders just makes it worse.

But I went to a doctor with it and he said I had scalp eczema, so I have to shampoo with prescription selenium sulfide.
