Hi everyone, We (Spryte and I, I don't have a mouse in my pocket ) have been planning our trip to Amsterdam. Thank you all for the advice you've given us so far. I went to a travel agent who has a package deal for flight and hotel. I asked for one right in the middle of the city, and the Schiller Guest House in Rembrandtplein was the one offered. The hotel looks really nice: http://www.amsterdamhotelcentral.com/amsterdamhotel/nhschiller/ Now, I am assuming that Rembrandtplein is a district or area in Amsterdam. If we stay there, how are we situated with regard to walking distances from cool places like coffehouses, museum, and parks. I see from a simple map that Rembrandtplein is close to the red light area, so that's cool. Would we be able to walk from there to Anne Frank house, for example... I guess my question is one of scale... If we're in Rembrandtplein, can we walk to cool places? jon
yeah you might want to go print the map from the coffeshop directory all the shops on there are easily walkable
I've stopped in a different NH hotel and they are very good quality so no problem there and Rembrandtplein is a very nice area and withing 10 mins walk from the centre of the city (Dam square, RLD) and your probaly only a good 20 min walk from Central station - Amsterdam is a very compact city but I always get a tram pass and make good use of them for even more time seeing the best city in the world! Jon
Congrats on getting your arrangements finalized! That is a great feeling indeed. It's all downhill from here baby. Rembrandtplein is a very nice area and is very much in the center of it all. You'll be quite happy I'm sure, and will be able to walk to all sorts of sites using that area as a starting point. I second the advice to get a tram pass though. Gives you total freedom. Look up F8 on the map below for Coffeeshops in Rebrandtplein. I highly recommend Bushdocter. Have Fun! http://www.coffeeshop.freeuk.com/General/Map.html
i always prefer to walk everywhere in amsterdam. i feel your missing too much along the way on the tram. i walk all over the city from rembrantsplein to waterlooplein to red light to cs and beyond!!!! lol that was a bit of a stupid moment... anyway rembrandtplein is a great spot. theres a lovely little teeny weeny park in the centre. me and my bf slept there for 6 hours one sunday afternoon after a very long drug fuelled weekend ( we only ended up there cause we got lost on teh tram on the way to vondelpark!!!) you get the idea of how fucked up we were! lol sorry for this idiotic post!
Thank you all for your comments. I'm really a walker, having given up owning a car ten years ago, so if Amsterdam is a compact city, that's right up my alley (since Pittsburgh is pretty compact too...) I'm really looking forward to enjoying a different way of life for a while... jon
Jon, for some perspective, using the cs.freeuk map I'd say you could walk to anywhere on the map in about 30 minutes- walking at a moderately fast pace.
Watch out for being gung-ho on the Bike Rental thing. Yes, it's a great way to get around, but it can be dangerous if you're not used to traffic and the flow of people getting in your way. You can walk from Centraal Station to Leidseplein in 30 minutes in terms of perspective for the map. It is very easy to get around on foot. So easy in fact that you don't realize how much walking you'll end up doing. Have Fun!
And Rembrandtplein is not an area but just the name of a square Try to walk into the Jordaan area, somehow tourist still not go there so much while I think it's the best part of town! (while waiting at line for the Anne Frank House you will see a small bridge in front of you (left), after that it doesn't matter where you go because you'll get lost anyway. Throw away your map, enjoy the neighbourhood. Keep on walking take any narrow street you like, left or right, take a drink at one of the many local bars and finally you will catch a main street and than you'll be happy you still got your map and you are able to find the way back easily) Have fun
I stayed at the Schiller on Rembrandtplein in 2002. It was first class then and have since been remodeled! I can't imagine it any fancier than it was, so it must be incredible. Rembrandtplein is the perfect place to be. The park in the middle is fantastic and you are a city block away from the Amstel River, and close to many area attractions. Follow the advice of getting a tram pass. It is the ONLY way to travel. Peace Always, AncientHippie
Bike hire or buying a bike is the only way to travel around A'dam, for me. You get to see all those great places where the trams just can't go. Nothing better than having the option to go wherever the front wheel is pointing, anytime day or night. IMO BTW, it was curious to see this thread re-start again from ages ago by Ancient-Hippy, it must have been on page 2 or 3 and would imagine the original poster has already been and gone. Oh well, it's not a problem.
i say bikes. the place is flat anyways. walking sucks becuase all those fuckin canals get in your way.
Just a note. If your going to hire a bike try and get one that does not scream ''I'm a tourist'', like those all yellow ones or Mac-Bikes with adverts plastered all over them. Another thing to avoid is cycling on the road where tram lines are. Sometimes you can't really avoid this but just be careful the bikes wheel avoids the trams grooves. I felt really embarrassed once when I was whizzing along at speed and got stuck in one infront of crowds of people. LOL
